I have a 01 tacoma prerunner with 162000 miles that has been making a squealing noise in the rear when I am driving a low speeds. I have searched online and in the manual and have found nothing. I believe it may be the rear bearings but am not sure. I would like an opinion from someone with more experience to help me figure out what going on . thanks in advance

when does it do it
in corners
under braking

we will need more info or best of all a videoit maybe somthing real simple

i had a crunching noise the other day from my pickup
it was a stick stuck in the handbrake cable and rubbing on the inside of the rim

Also possibly a dry or shot u-joint, you say it's a 'prerunner' so I'm assuming it has some kind of lift, so the rear pinion angle may be incorrect and causing premature u-joint wear.
But as fowler said, more info would be helpful.

Bearings (incl diff and axle) don't tend to squeal, so much as moan or hum. Step one- check your brakes for wear, and while you're in there, see if one of the backing plates/dust shields is a bit tweaked and might be touching the rotor/drum.

That's the issue
what do u define as squeal over hum or moan
I'd say bearing hum in normal operation

But yeah seized bearing squeal otherwise they usually tick or scrape or grind

Damit we need an international dictionary of odd noises

But otherwise good advice
Maybe also check brake adjustments and look for rocks in the drum

I figured out what it was after I lifted the rear. I spun the rear tires no noises. Then I put it in drive and I could hear the squealing sound I put some wd40 on the drive shaft center support bearing and it instantly stopped. Is this an easy part to replace and how did it disappear ?thanks

Okay- So you've a cooked hangar bearing. To begin with, look it over closely and see if there's a grease fitting on it. If there is, pump it full of high-pressure wheel-bearing grease. That should buy you some time, while you source a replacement.

You can also buy a grease injector needle that will fit a standard grease gun that allows you to sneak grease into things that don't have zerk fittings.

I have the whole kit for those; and while the method does work, it's probably best to learn how to use it on less mission critical parts.

Also, if a spray can was all it took (WD-40 is NOT a lubricant; it continues to amaze me that they haven't sued back to stone age for false advertising), then why not just switch over to a quality can of spray oil, or even an oil can filled with clean motor oil?

All in all, though, the bearing is most likely still toast......:surrender::popcorn:

Yea there is no bearing in it any more and the sound is coming from the drive shaft rotating on the center bearing housing. I got a new one for only $40 shipped from amazon and it should arrive tomorrow. Its the first thing to ever go bad on my truck with 162000 miles on it with serious abuse besides parts that need to be changed like the pads, plugs and oil. I was thinking of adding a zerk fitting to it but the bearings come lubricated and hopefully last another 160000 miles.

:cornut:I offroaded the crap out of it when I was younger. Took it through the woops at 45-50 mph and jumped it over ten feet once and blew up my rear shocks, hit table tops ,step downs ect. Im suprised nothing broke until 5 years later beside my suspension. lol

But if the diff bearing got to that state then better not speak too soon

I'd be checking the wheel bearings
They are ment to be repacked fairly regularly anyway

lol
thats always a mission
to sort though the provided list and see what is legitimate and what is just raising money for the shop

the local toyota dealer recently serviced our hilux work pickup
tried to charge us for replacing the spark plugs and fit a new battery
exept the bloody thing is a diesel engine and the battery was flat when i picked it up and was clearly old

Yea

Sick of dealers lately
Everyone from the motorbike to the farm machines all been severely let down

If I can't do it then the smaller shop the better
