The pic on the left has that piece of metal going down to the rod that goes to the front......what makes the shaft off the steering wheel turn 90 deg. to come out the side....to that piece of metal? I how that makes since. Is it a right angle gear box?

No RAGB involved, TS's idea is all linkages including lots of pitman arms.

The rod coming out the side has another pitman arm attached to it pointing towards the front of the kart, the steering column also has a pitman arm attached pointing to the left (in this case) & a rod connecting the two.

As you turn the steering wheel, it moves the pitman arm attached to the column up & down.
That, in turn, moves the rod attached up & down &, therefore,
moves the pitman arm attached to the fixed horizontal rod up & down,
rotating the fixed horizontal rod
which moves the pitman arm on the end, which is pointing down, back & forward &
moves the drag link back & forward

Are you following?

I believe it has to point right.

Lessee-

Turn steering wheel left

*pitman arm (pointing right) moves up
*this rotates the lateral shaft (arm forward) rearward
*this swings "outside" arm (pointing down) forward,
*pushing drag link forward,
*steering arm on L/F wheel swings forward,
*steering the L/F wheel to the left

By my calculations, as long as the pitman arm on the steering column is on the opposite side to the arm on the end of the horizontal rod, you're good.

I figure the pitman arm has to point right if the arm on the horizontal points forward. Left if the arm points back. Either way, the concept is there, with the flexibility to adjust for actual conditions. Now, we just need somebody that can draw!

Surplus center (link is in the link directory) has a decent amount of golf cart sized wheels for a very good price . I bought the slick version for my project . used small bike wheels up front and its working out for me quite well.

Got part of our frame welded up today. It is going slow but looks nice! I am still looking for help with hubs for those wheels. I will try to get some pics up later.

I don't know- maybe see if you can get those rims in a common 4-on-4 bolt pattern. Failing that, maybe re-drill those rims to 4-on-4? I have 2 sets of 8" Douglas's. One set has been redrilled. Was probably done to solve a hub problem.

Another option you may have is to re-drill common hubs to match the rims.

i'm not sure, but it looks like golf cart hubs might work. i haven't measured, but it is something to check out, or maybe go to your local atv dealer, and see if they have a wrecked one
