Well...here's the sad truth. ....my body has already been compromised. ..I can't go back in time. ......

Financially. ...A move doesn't really work.....and really....WHY? ????.I'm and old man limping my way to oblivion.....and . . .......it's hard to explain. ....but my one and only left me......so I really don't share exactly the same level of excietment as you do to wake up tomorrow. .....

What's really bad is.....it's all perfectly logical.....but after almost 30 years .......all the logic in the world. ....doesn't quench the pain of the mother of your child and your faithful wife. ...suddenly leaving. ...

It's a head effer.......oh well. ..I do remember one night I kicked her butt out.....and put all her crap on the curb......in the rain. .....I have to give kudos to her dad for just picking the stuff up and not approaching me.......

I feel for you Doug...

I'm sure most of you know, but CNC lathes cost quite a bit. So they should be maintained as such, high dollar machines...... Over 2 weeks ago, I left a note for the machinist helpers to clean and wash my machine. I even took all of last week off..... Still not cleaned..... :censored::censored:
I asked a helper if they / he had seen my note, with a reply of "no"....... Really??!?? So I'm ask you, the ever vigilant members of this forum...... Can you see the note I left for them? :mad2::mad2:

Got a temp on tryout at work ATM; he seems to be under the impression that if you pull a cutting tool out of another machine and load it into this machine, the machine is supposed to read your mind and measure/ calibrate the tool without you actually doing a thing, like even figuring out what tool # it's supposed to have assigned to it...... (I loaded the tool, and called up the program, and it just crashed...... What do you mean I have to measure the tool? What's an offset #???????)

DUDE! Are you Fing joking?! CNCs are pretty smart, but not that smart..... He must not have any real world work experience. How the heck can you not know to set a tool before it's used? Did he even proof the program? EDIT it or anything? I know your programs have the tool numbers in the blocks, they all work that way. So what was he thinking?
O it just hit me.... He is merely an operator, not a machinist. He can't do edits or simple control board program. We get those guys from time to time. We don't hire new CNC guys, we train them, from within..... We get a new CNC and a manual operator gets a promotion. It's less costly for a "machinist" (i use that word lightly) off the streets to come in a crash a manual than a CNC.
Funny, off subject, thing happened to me the other day..... I was setting zero on a new work piece, with #1. I had it in manual mode, to run up to the face, at 100x. Office guy brought me my job traveler and asked something about the tool and paperwork. After explain to him the paperwork error, I turned to resume setting zero. My normal method is 100x till I'm with in 1/2" , then I drop to 1x.....to touch the face. Because I stopped in mid action, I forgot to drop to 1x and SLAMMED #1 into the face. Destroyed the tool holder, cracked the block, turned the post, and shut the whole shop down because every one "HAD" to come see what happened..... :mad2::mad2:
As you know (Pat) , I had to reset all my tools again..... :censored::censored::iagree::censored: that's a couple hours..... :mad2::mad2:

Well......I ran out of lip bandages.......

At this point.....I don't think they would do any good anyway. .....

I need to go get sutures.....I have bit them so hard here lately. ....I think I'll just have them go ahead and sew them shut while they're at it........:surrender::furious2::innocent::sarcasm:

:surrender: :surrender: Jim, all I can say is "been there, done that........ It hasn't happened often so far in my career, but (unfortunately) it's happened more than once.....:surrender: :surrender: :censored:

IIRC I have seen a self calibrating toolhead (well it's actually the machine, but the toolhead is triggering the command on tool removal)
really fancy actually.. it runs through a lightbeam with a slow running toolhead and measures it's diameter (and somehow counts the flutes... don't ask ... IDK)
then lowers the tool into a height sensor to get the depth.
the rest is done according to a preset table of known tools.

can't even recall where I saw that.. Heidenhain *shrugs* or some yt-vid.. IDK
but it was impressive I must say.

Alex, all three of the DMG's at work have that system (and the high end Heidenhain control). But all three of them are five axis machines; a temp off the street won't be allowed near one.

Also, while the system works well, you have to know what you are doing to call up the correct cycle to correctly measure the tool. I've been here almost a year, and I've barely scratched the surface on those three machines, mostly because I'm kept plenty busy with the five CNC machine's that I run on a daily basis (not all at once, but there's a two to three machine mix on any given day).

As for the machine he was running, it was a three axis with none of that technology..... Just the old fashioned way, where you have to use your brain... I'm fairly certain that was where the problem was....:ack2: :ack2:

I had a good one yesterday... NOT!

After it has, pretty much, sat for 2 months, now that Spring has hit, I had to get the riding mower out; I bought a trickle charger about a month ago so, the battery was good but, it took a while to start; it eventually started, ran for around 30 seconds to a minute, started hunting & then died; 30 seconds later, it would start up again & repeat the process...

It wasn't difficult to deduce a fuel delivery issue, the question was why?

The last thing I recall doing that affected the fuel system was fitting a new inline tap (the hose is 1/4" but the tap is only 3/16"); after checking the flow before & after the tap (heavy flow before the tap, trickle after), I deduced the tap was the cause of the problem. I removed & replaced the whole hose with a new single length of hose & tried again; can anyone guess what happened?

WRONG! It did exactly the same thing! Now I'm thinking "maybe the new hose is too small?" So, I headed to the local mower shop for some new fuel hose; he says "just put a filter in the line" & starts digging for a 1/4" filter; he also said "it sounds like a carb issue"...

Back home, I refitted the original hose with the new filter in the line &, you wouldn't believe it, it did exactly the same thing! :censored::mad2: Now I'm starting to lose it, swearing & cursing & throwing &... oh wait... now I remember...

When I bought this thing, it was leaking fuel out of the fuel bowl, indicating a high float level so, I adjusted the float accordingly; maybe I adjusted it too far?

So, I pulled the float, tweaked it a bit, put it back together & it ran flawlessly :wai: Then I put the tap back in the line, just to see what would happen; no change :wai::wai:

SO, the lessons learned?
1. ALWAYS remember what you've done previously, it could save you a LOT of time & frustration
2. Occams Razor: The simplest explanation is usually the correct one...

WOW!!!! what a reversal.......

'Ol Doug started this thread as both a "Yeah!!!!" and "GRRR!!!!!!!!!!!" place to vent. So here goes.....

I had a decent night at work, nothing but the same old, same old. Got home, same with the daily routine. Then I logged on to the forum.......

I don't personally know the folks posting in one thread this evening: they've never insulted me (hopefully I'm in the same boat with them), never told each other where to go and how to get there over a ball game...

What has me venting is the fact that they were comparing notes on pole barns, attached to property with homes. The pole barns in question alone cost way more than my personal home. The size of several being discussed (both currently owned and dreamed about) exceed the combined square footage of many companies I've worked for with 10+ employees with the physical plant to boot. And several were complaining about how they don't have room for all their toys.....

I'm sorry; I just had to get that off my chest......

A mans shed is never big eniugh

My dad complained about the machinery
Only 20m by 40m

So built one next to it
120m by 60m mammoth
Now hes filled it and back to complaining about only having more roof space than 4 average city blocks
The advantage of a shed apose to a barn
Its cost is more luxury car than house
