I just realized how much bump starting is gonna piss me off so I'm trying to figure out a way to make the manual pulley clutch with out using brake cable, cuz that pisses me off too.

This was my idea:

The bolt that the idler spins on extends through pretty far so that you push it down with your foot to cut drive and let up slowly to move (kinda like a real car clutch) Does the idler have to go on the bottom cuz thats the slack side? If not, it'd make it alot easier.

My grandpa also had the idea to make a "dead man" clutch where you have to keep your foot down to have drive power, so if I fell off it wouldn't take off w/o me, I think that's a pretty good idea too.

Tell me what you think!

it really shouldn't matter where the tensioner goes (top/bottom). the dead man idea can be a good idea. if you hit bumps it will likely cause a lack of power allowing you the extra time to navigate them. make sure to use a guard though. glad to see you are still working at it.

From experience it is extremely important that you tension the side of the belt which will be slack under acceleration. If you try to tension the other side you will need a LOT more force.

Yeah, I'll try the one in the pic first, if it dosen't work well, I'll go to the Dead Man clutch. I think a skateboard wheel would be pretty skinny and the belt might roll off it, how about a piece of pipe like 3" long rolling on bearings on a bolt as the tensioner?

Gotta save up some $ and get a eBay gift card and order some parts already!

i see what you are saying. i will for my reference equate it to kicking over an engine with too advanced timing. it can nearly throw you over the bars. as a deadman switch top would work better, though it may be too hard to keep the proper tension, and cause undue stress on the tensioner.

The setup your talking about is called a belt tensioner. If your worried about it taking off if you fall off, figure out a way to make a lanyard switch like on a jetski. That way, if you fall off, it kills the engine. You might also think about adding something to lock the tensioner in the off position rather than use the dead man idea. For the tensioner, you can buy actual idler pulleys used for this exact purpose.

I'm not worried about it riding off without me, I didn't couldn't use an idler pulley because the wheel would spin on the back of the belt (look at pic above).

I was thinking I could get an idler pulley on the v part of the bottom of the belt, then hook it up so that the shaft its on pivots in the middle, so I would press down to cut drive power and let up to engage drive power.

What kind of spring should I use to keep the clutch down when I'm driving, also, how much slack would be need for the clutch to work, like if a rope goes around the engine and axle pulleys and its like 24" how long should the belt be to incorporate the clutch?

Thanks

They make flat idler pulleys too.

Most people use a trampoline spring. I would say get a 25 or 26 in. belt.

Just curious, was the motor and battery totally shot on this thing? I was looking at thinking the motor and battery may make a mild small kids go kart, but maybe their not powerful enough?

So, this project is on hold for a while (it's really pissing me off lol)

But, my friend and I have another project going that is really flying along. We found an electric scooter in the trash (again trashed elecs.) bolted a 50cc pocketbike motor i had on it. I had no carb so I have a goped carb right now (i know, i know) had the rear wheel and sprocket from the moped I crashed and it all fits together nicely. does anyone know where to get throttle cable with the little thing on the end that fits into pocket bike carb, beside the internet? also what size fuel line do these use, cuz i need to get some.

So, basically a 50cc goped, this thing is gonna kick arse :devil2:

the throttle cable set up is royally pissing me off so I came up with a rod system controlled with a lever, the problem is I can only have one hand on the handle bars w/e its gonna be scary **** riding this thing

gonna get the pillow blocks when I get some money on the debit card and finish that other scooter project.

ok so the local shop has a 4" pulley but not a 3" which is the same as the engine. How can I figure the drive ratio with the jackshaft? It would be 3" pulley on the engine to 4" and 12t on the jackshaft to 65t on the wheel.

I'd render it dead due to the fact that all he contributed was, "I have one."

not a matter of fact that i have one because i dont have one i only used the same base frame he did and the rest was all my mods, bracketing, and engine. its being rebuilt right now and it will be done in a month.
