well a generous amount of $300 towards a new welder was my b-day present, i have been saving up my money all year (shoveling driveways, transplanting plants, welding stuff, mowing lawns, walking dogs, or anything else i can make a buck off of!) so that got about 300, and then i had 300 that i have been saving up for many years. the tank and wire money is going to come from the sale of my old welder, so lets hope that sells easily! i will have to wait a few months before i can save up enough for a second, smaller gas tank for argon (i may have to rent one). at this point, i'm almost jealous of myself! LOL.

so you could say its a b-day/3 years savings present, LOL. as i have said, would have gotten a smaller one, but
-why buy a Handler 140 when i already got a 120v machine? not worth 500..
-how about a Handler 187, its perfect, but if i want to use aluminum it will cost me another $400!
-that puts me at the Handler 210, yes expensive, but think about it. your only paying $720 for a 210A MIG unit with a 5yr warranty, and its made in the U.S.A! of course you need to buy the spool gun at the same time, but if i get it now, i wont spend $200 on a spool gun as soon as i get it. anyway, now i will never have to think about which MIG welder to buy for many, many, many years to come!

i will admit its a bit overkill, but its better i be to capable, then having to outsource my my first project because my welder can't handle it!

just listed my old Lincoln welder on cl, $175 OBO. hopefully i can get an 80cf bottle with that and the student discount! i have a few other people i'm going to contact too who i think may be interested.





EDIT: wow, i got an offer for $125 already! not quite what i was thinking, i will probably wait a while and then possibly send him back an offer of about $155

as you can tell, no updates lately because i was on a short vacation.

i waited some more for offers on the welder, one guy offered me full price, then asked me questions about what he needed to weld stuff, then after a week, i asked him when he could come buy it, he then told me he wasn't interested anymore..... . by that time all the other low priced offers had fell through except for one person who will give me $100, but no way i'm selling it for less than $125! anyway, i still don't have money for even a 40cf gas bottle....

on the plus side i got a little surprise when returned from my vacation, a Hobart handler 210 was in my garage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it looks like a great little (well its actually like 80lbs and the size of two milk crates ) machine, can't wait until i can get a 230v outlet so i can test it out!


it does stink being nearly broke, but i would rather get a nice big welder! considering that dad doesn't want me to buy any "junk" of craigslist, the best option was to get more tools! besides, with more tools i can buy less parts and make them instead!


the plan to make the welding cart, then bench grinder stand, then table, and eventually make a race kart frameauto is still going ahead, i just need to get a 230v outlet installed and sell the old welder to buy a gas bottle. hopefully i can get those things done soon so this thread can get interesting.

also, for anyone who remembers my problem, i think i have traced the problem in my drill press to either a bent chuck, or taper adapter, i think its the taper adapter, so i'll get that, its only 6 bucks, but shipping is nearly 2 weeks! :toetap05:

similar situation with my mom. i have a murray riding mower chassis and body panels, huge pile of scrap metal, big rusty snowblower attachment, 2 lawn mowers, a third one in the shed, my mini bike, and a old sears tractor.......... all over the place. shes like its a yard, not a junkyard LOL.

sucks your press is having trouble still. i dont use mine much.

i got that sears tractor off craigslist, he wanted $150, i offered $80, and he took it!!!! but i have to do some chores for him to pay the rest of it off, no problem. tell your parents something like that would be a good deal because you can make money back from it. mine came with this huge snowblower that bolts on the front. i can do a 50 foot driveway in probably under 10 minutes. sweet! i cant wait until the winter!!!!

until then, im trying to modify a murray deck to fit it. it didnt come with that part.

also if its old enough, a little rusty, it will be cheap. you can repaint it, fix it up, i am currently working on the wiring on mine. i got the head lights to work. just have to figure out why the solenoid just clicks when you turn the key. i already replaced it so i dont know if thats it...

also its a fun rig to take off roading. the things a tank. gonna do a pull-off tomorrow between my deathtrap kart and it.

and make some money to afford it all! but best of all......

a Hobart trek would have been cool, but i don't need that. actually, considering that i probably wont ever really need to bring my welder anywhere, and that i'm not running a business, the lower duty cycle, lower amps, flux core only design, and higher cost probably make it a less desirable application for me. that said, if i was planning to expect to need a welder in the middle of the forest, the trek 180 or a generator welder would be ideal, no doubt! now that i think about it, i could probably buy an old generator and get it working to run my HH210 anywhere!

can't wait until i can use it tomorrow! i will be stuck with FCAW for the time being, but thats ok, the extra power will be insane!

as you may or may not know, i entered the mini bike into a science faire, then won, and waited until a few weeks ago to go to the next round (where i was disqualified bacause it was too dangerouse, , ). while waiting to go to the next round i was not allowed to put fuel in it, so i couldn't use it up until a week or two ago.

so, to sum it up.... i haven't had a chance to use it yet. before i can test it i have to either find a way to clean the slag off the welds inside the tank, or get a fuel filter (i will have to order the filter online). after that i have to figure out how to actually start the engine, i was going to make it a push start (you know, roll down hill and pop the clutch), but just pushing it around m garage is very challenging because of the super low gearing, so unless the addition of oil helps wayyyyyy more than i think it will i'm going to have to develop a starter for the engine.

i would use the pull start kit they sell, but the frame goes right were it would go. so i'm going to either:
-do nothing because it works (i can hope!)
-change gearing.
-make a pull start.
-use a drill to start it.
-make an electric start.
-make a kick start.
-modify a leaf blower recoil. (mot likely)

with my new welder i may also make an aluminum fuel tank.

and, if all else fails, i'm putting a lawn boy dura-force with a cent clutch.

That would be cool. I really like the look of that minibike you made, and I am sure a lot of people would like to have a look at them to get some ideas.

yea im sure omb would love it. Id think the gearing would be difficult to get right because normally they push a huge bike wheel with a regular size sprocket. so youve got to compensate for that a little. sucks that you cant fit a recoil on there but it might push start ok who knows

the gear ratio wasn't that bad, it only has a 4.1:1 reduction, so with a 10t output, and a 24t rear sprocket i'm at 9.84:1, about 15mph if i remember, usually the bicycles go 30-35mph.

lets hope the push start works, other wise i will either make a kick start, or modify a leaf blower recoil.

the elctrician came today!

this welder is insane, the wet out is great, and it doesn't make much splatter, even with flux core wire. it also burns really, really hot! i welded some 1/4" no problem, it got so hot it stayed glowing red for like 1min, and i couldn't touch it for a really long time. great little machine. later i can test the MIG, aluminum, and highest output functions (yea, not even on max for 1/4" )
