Hello All,

First-time poster here. Wanted to share my newest project. It's an 8HP Manco Dingo. After some "artful" negotiation, my girls and I drove over to Auburn Hills last weekend and picked 'er up.

Runs like a champ. It was the estate of an older couple who kept it for their grandson. Future plans are to street-ify this thing. Lose the roll cage, ditch the knobbies for street slicks, get it sitting lower, etc. (I have access to more parking lots than I do trails or fields). I have some plans for "stage II", but I'll keep them confidential for now. My wife wants me to leave it alone and just drive it. So I'll slap an ORV sticker on it and drive it for a few months. But before you know it, the mayhem will begin! Anywho, enjoy some pics.

On the trip home.

Discovered at the sellers house the clutch was locked up. Drive clutch was fully engaged. The inner drum I am pointing to should be fully inside the outer drum.

Tore it apart and found the rollers had come out of their tracks. Look close at the rollers.

Back in their tracks. Also crimped the spring ends so they don't pop off.

Reassembled. Inner drum is now inside outer drum.

Got the slack back in the belt.

Also got rid of the ghey wooden pedal extensions (it was a kid's kart). Here you can still see one on the brake pedal.

Both extensions gone. Pedals straightened.

Thats about it for now. I'll clean and powerwash her up and post some more pics. I promise some changes before the riding season is up.

Yup. Comet 40 Series. And I'm diggin' the e-brake. The kart likes to roll a little at idle. It's a pretty simple design. You may want to fab one up.

I love the pedal extensions! CUSTOM!!! XD

Overall, nice kart! looks pretty well taken care of, well, except for the minor issues.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Yeah, it's been well taken care-of. Some loose hardware, a little carb tuning, and the clutch thing. Thats about it. Can't wait to de-grease and power wash to see how clean it'll come.

got any close ups of the brake lock?

Also, a little taste of what's to come. I'm going for the '70s vibe.

And possibly....

I don't know. Obviously I'd repaint it, but we'll see. Let me know what you think.

Got some seat time tonight. After a little carb tuning, it runs like a champ. I tell ya though, that clutch is fully-engaged by like 1500 RPM. Takes off great, then when the clutch engages, it starts to labor. If I remember, I can replace the rollers and springs for a higher engagement RPM. I have a feeling that I'll wait til I see what the small tires will do. I'm sure a smaller axle sproket will be in order.

"Not interesting"? What kind of spirit is that? :toetap05:

I'm sure it'll look pretty cool once you're done. Post pics of progress!

Yea, give the rollers a thick coat of bearing grease.

Thanks Kenny. Found this quote on TAV40 maintenance

Indicators of a torque converter system requiring cleaning and lubrication are erratic or jerky engagement upon acceleration and a tendency to apparently "lock" into a particular speed (a second cause of jerky engagement is an excessively loose drive chain). If either one of these conditions exist, service the unit immediately. Both driver and driven pulleys should be disassembled and cleaned. (source-gokartsupply.com)

Looks like some lubrication is required. Bearing grease will do, huh? I'll give it a whirl.

Thanks for all the kind words! Yeah Mike, that mural is crazy. I have to rebuild the tip (it broke off-I got the piece), so I'll have to repaint it.

Got some seat time in 'er yesterday. What a blast! Ran like stink. Didn't give me a hiccup. Not the best off-road performer, though. With no suspension, it's no wonder every nut and bolt on this thing was loose. I live in a city, too. I had a heck of a time finding a place to ride. A couple of schoolyards was all I found. I may be moving up the street tire conversion so I can get some use out of it.

Mocked up my front wheels last night. Spindle sizes are different-but my Azuza drop spindles fit perfect! The only thing I need to do is switch the spindle arm from front-steer (Rupp) to rear-steer (Manco). I'll post pics when I start.

If I were you I would keep the roll cage and add a seatbelt(I have pretty slick GM lap belt setup, pics later). Its hard to tip one of these but they will if ya try hard enough. Im pretty sure you can flip over and swap the left and right spindles to lower the front(grease em up real good while ya have the front end apart), the back is limited by the sprocket guard.

Sorry. The 'cage has gots to go! Besides, this is something I think I'd rather be ejected from instead of strapped-into in the event of a rollover.

You can flip over the spindles and then bend the arms to readjust the angle, but the spindle shaft is too small. The shaft that fits my Azusa rims is larger in dia.

You're right about the chain guard. In measuring the rear, the chain guard will be the limiting factor. I can still drop the rear axle about a 1/2" before the sprocket gets too close to the guard. The drop combined with the smaller wheels will give me very little room under the guard. I may have to hack it off. I'll have to do a sprocket change anyway. I have a feeling this thing will top out at about 15 MPH with the small rear tires.
