As far as I know, Harbor Fright sells the hemi version and the coupon for $99 can be used on it. Just check the specs on the box.

I might be wrong though...but I believe HF sells the hemi version.

Depends on the store location. The only one here in Lincoln does not sell hemi version of any of the Predator engines. The Predator 212 hemi part number is 60363. It has a cast aluminum valve cover.

When I bought my predator, I had it shipped to my house but I bought it from harbor freights website. I actually ordered the hemi and they sent me the non hemi, but I didn’t bother with contacting them and instead just ran the crap out of it because hey, a predator is a predator.

But even if that was the only way to get a hemi predator, 175 is ridiculous. It’s real easy to get a predator for 99 dollars, and a non hemi runs just great with mods IMO.

I wouldn’t pay $175 for the hemi if the non-hemi is $100.
Harbor Freight won’t ship the Hemi just because you ordered that specific part number. As far as they are concerned, it’s the exact same product with two different SKU numbers. I’ve had to educate a HF employee every time I’ve gone in to buy one.

BTW, the next engine I build will be a non-hemi. The new ones come with 27/25mm valves just like the Hemi version, and the non-hemi is easier to build if trying for high compression and/or high valve lift. The new non-hemi comes with better valve spring retainers/keepers.

Disadvantages....
Hemi has stronger stock rocker arms.
Hemi has thicker (stronger) valve stems.
You have to modify (or change) the valve guides in the non-Hemi if you want to run SS valves.

The hemi is not available in CA, I suspect due to emissions approvals (or it doesn't have a prop 65 warning on it....GRRR!).

There are actually three SKUs and I only know that 60363 is the hemi. They're all $100 right now. It's not worth paying 75% more for the hemi just to say you've got one. In fact, there is no benefit from the hemi. It's a worse candidate for serious builds than a regular one due to the difficulties that Bob mentioned.

I put a hemi head on my Honda because it was a thoroughly researched decision based on very specific criteria that 99.99999% of people won't be building to.

I ran the hemi and the non hemi on the dyno last night. Bone stock. They have different torque curves, but make the same horsepower, and have the same inertia values. Non-hemi makes more torque down low in the 2000 rpm range, and the hemi makes a more broad power band.

Governor bypass (held open) and governor intact (no throttle stop).

bypassed governor hemi started floating the valves around 5200 rpm.
bypassed governor non-hemi floated valves at a higher rpm than that. cant remember off the top of my head.

hemi revs to 5200 rpm with the governor intact and "functional" under full load
non hemi revs to 4300-4500 with the governor intact and "functional" under full load.

These were with the two bone stock predator 212 engines on conventional 10w30 after 3 hr break in. Since this is china stuff, your results may vary.

SAE correction shows 6.4-6.5 hp, Standard correction shows 3% more.

Either way i think if you are not going to modify the engine, you can get whatever one you want as they are pretty much even. Even if you modify the engine to the extreme, you can still swap heads between the two.

I would go for the broad power band if I were to replace my Briggs flathead with a Predator.

How different are the torque curves?

Does the non-hemi have a three-angle valve seat? Both of my hemi heads do, which I found surprising.
