Define cheap. $100?
Spread the word among friends, co-workers, relatives that you're looking for gasoline powered equipment in any condition.
I posted signs around my work place and got so much stuff I had take down signs. Now my garage is filled with possibilities.
Some of it is junk...some of it can be utilized.
Tillers, weed whackers, cutoff saws, antique 2 cycle reel mowers, generators, pumps, ducted ventilation fans/blowers, snowthrowers, etc.
I'm still looking for running outboards and multi-cylinder RV generators.
Sometimes Ebay has some reasonable stuff.
How much power are you looking for?

The metal fan cover on mine doesn't have the same shape as these engines, it's more square at the top near the cylinder and round at the bottom. It's probably a variation of the 6S.

1HP-1.6HP should be enough for slow speeds right? I was figuring, for Zakman's go-kart, or my bike trailer, that 3600RPM at 20 or 25mph should be a proper gearing. Any input on this?

It's not a variation. You have a Briggs 2HP then.

its a 1/4" shaft, and to add a clutch, i have machined a spacer to accommodate a 3/4" clutch bore
