It was a joke man. Sorry you get irritated so easily!

fwiw, some people here recommended I use brake cleaner etc. and others said get a new band.

REALLY? Care to quote one of those posts recommending brake cleaner?

I don't get upset easily...but I can quote plenty of posts where you were asked for a profile location....and completely ignored advice.....

Yep, here you go! (FYI, your infatuation with where I live was flattering but now is verging on creepy...seriously)

Spray it all down with brake cleaner. Sand the inner band and outer drum with 320 grit. More pedal leverage as mentioned works well too. All will help... but it's a poor design by nature for a "fast" kart.

For this discussion I'm not worried about Poboy haranguing you about your profile.

I'm referring to the post you listed (which magically fails to load here), about just spray it down with brake cleaner.

If your band brake friction material had just been misted/lightly sprayed with what I'm most likely guessing was WD-40, and you were there to go "OH :censored: !!!!!". the brake cleaner approach might have worked. The problem is that the previous owner doomed that tack to failure, and all the effort you've posted up here to save it was in vain.

I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

And it was mentioned at least once here.......

Here you go. I took screenshots instead of using the Tapatalk quote function. And as I said, new band is in the mail.

Now. About that 'freezer method'...thoughts?

Ok. Here are some pics. I hand sanded down the brake drum with 320 grit and then tried it out. No change. Looks like maybe things aren't lining up very well..

You're band lining is contaminated, and need's to be replaced. Someone might have had this WONDERFUL idea of keeping the drum from rusting while the kart was parked, and hosed down the whole thing with WD 40 or something. You usually see that shiny black surface on a friction lining when its been contaminated with some kind of petroleum product.

As for the drum, it's glazed up pretty good. Degrease it with brake and part cleaner, then hit it with 80~120 grit sand paper in a dual cross hatch pattern, with each direction ~45° from the direction of rotation.

As for the band hanging a little off kilter with the brake released, that's not a deal breaker; the important part is that it center's up on the drum when actuated.

Selective editing will get you into trouble around here.

Selective editing, it was a screenshot. Lol. You are a paranoid bunch!!

Here's the quote that you couldn't see originally.

Says to use brake cleaner and sand down the band. Which I did. And I ordered a new band. Like was suggested.

Your own post's are contradicting you. If you would care to actually read the full content of my post, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Not sure of your point man, I ordered a new band. Isn't that what you were suggesting?

Poboy asked for me to quote someone saying to use brake cleaner which I did.

True enough but, technically, that post doesn't specifically say to spray the band with brake cleaner...

Quite simply, your band is toast; you're doing the right thing by replacing it but, attempting to resurrect the old one is simply a waste of time; certain materials degrade over time, friction materials & rubber are two good examples; tell me, if you found some tyres that have been sitting out in the weather for a decade, were faded & cracked, would you even consider putting them on a car? I know I wouldn't; same goes for brake pads...

Now, I can't pinpoint exactly where or why the animosity & hostility began in this thread but, IT STOPS NOW! Any further animosity or hostility will result in either a ban or this thread being closed (at the very least)...

Karty, we have a motto around here: HELP US HELP YOU...

By providing your location, which can be as vague as a city or even a state, it helps us determine the best source of parts for you; also, there have been several occasions where members help each other personally, which would not have happened if those members hadn't posted their location; about a month ago, poboy helped a new member get his kart up & running like a clock &, just this week, supermanotorious helped a new member in the same way...

Quite simply, we're here to help; if someone asks for our help & then ignores our advice (which is based on decades of first hand knowledge & experience), we tend to ignore them...

As a final note, I find it somewhat ridiculous that this thread is now 4 pages long when all the advice you need is on page #1...

Agreed and thank you.

I did what people here suggested (used brake cleaner, sanded the drum and ordered a new band) and thanked people for their help.

I apologize....one member did recommend spraying everything down with brake cleaner before you posted pics....after which the advice to get a new band was consistently repeated....(not sand down the drum and try to use the old band)...MAL only offered advice for resurfacing the drum...

Which you now need to repeat or replace....

I understand you have a band on the way...and we hope you get it sorted out shortly....

Ok, so against EVERONES advice, I replaced the band and sanded the drum.

It was pretty tight so I adjusted a bit and although it was rubbing the drum it wasn't too/overly tight against it.

I took it for a spin and it worked really really well for the first couple stops. Then something happened and it stopped stopping so well

It seems it is kind of cockeyed and not aligning to the drum. Not really sure how to solve this? Some bands have those metal 'guides'(?) that keep them aligned with the drum and I feel like that would work wonders here...

Pic 1: right after I put it on. Aligned well.

Is your anchor bolt bent or is the band itself twisted?

If the band is twisted...you can straighten it back with a couple of crescent wrenches...but it needs to follow the drum...I suspect your mounting bolt is bent and the mounting surface may need to be reinforced...

This is actually the major problem the new member Fabroman mentioned had with his kart....I reinforced the mount and he replaced the incorrect bolt a PO had put on....I used a vice and a crescent wrench to take out most of the twist in the band....then tweaked it with two crescent wrenches....(putting on the kart and taking it off until it was perfect....)

EDIT: Just noticed something else.....isn't the top bolt that holds the cable on backwards from how it was originally?
That could be contributing to the alignment issue.

Good info. I'll check the mounting bolt, I don't recall seeing a bend in it. As for the other bolt, good eye! I think you are right. Not sure if it would cause such an off kilter issue but I'll Change it back to be sure.

Thanks

Ok. The bolt was indeed a bit bent so I bent it back. Band seems straight. Also changed around the bolt on the side where it attaches to the cable. Nice and snug and everything looked good...but then it all goes bonkers after about stop number 3. Band slips inwards.

I'm thinking a caliper/disk is I'm my future...these bands are a pain!!

Oh!!!! I see it now!!!!!! you need to but a spacer in to keep the anchor point centered over the drum....do that ....and you won't have any more problems...(with the brakes).....Poboy....might be a different story!:lolgoku:

BTW: Your bolt probably needs to be a half inch to an inch longer....

Yeah, was kinda thinking the same thing. Handful of washers or what to space it? Thanks

Yeah....washers....a large nut that slides over the shaft....(if there's room for it)....or the professional looking way....tubing cut to length...

But....any of the above.

Thanks. Any idea of the correct bolt size? I'm not at home and don't have my manual or laptop with me. No worries either way. It can wait. Thanks again for the help.
