Hey all, new guy here. I have a old two seater silver fox off road go kart. It has the 6.5 subaru robin motor on it with a new comet 30 torque converter. The engine is pretty worn out and I am looking for ideas on a different engine. I want to be able to climb hills and maybe hit 30 mph or so. I was thinking of a briggs animal engine or a gy6. What do you think? any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

When you say "worn out" what do you mean? It is probably worth it to do some maintenance on the old engine instead of buying a whole new one.

It's had the snot ran out of it since it was new. It won't climb over a prairie dog mound and will barely go 15 mph. I have the converter set up with the middle setting. I have cleaned the carb and put in a new spark plug. It runs smooth just don't have any snort left.

No. I haven't dug into the motor and not sure I want to. I just cant see rebuilding the engine unless I can get substantially more power. I would like to get more throttle response also.

Hard to say. Im rebuilding a briggs 8 hp i would sell you. If it is not putting much power out i would say its a compression issue or carb problems. But if you say it runs good im not sure.

Yeah, it runs like a champ but feels like a 1hp motor. You think an animal engine would be a good choice?

Yeah, i have never used one my self but i have never seen any real bad reviews. When you buy your new engine make sure your PTO or drive shaft will fit your tourque converter so it dosent go to waste. Checkout the Lifan engines they seem pretty decent and you can get one with a tranny witch would help you with your hill climbing and top speed. Tranny and a tourque converter seems like a pretty good combo for you.

Hey thanks, I checked out lifans web site. Looks like a good engine but I need one with a auto trans which I don't see one there.

Oh you might be able to find a dirtbike or quad engine around 125cc with an auto tranny or a semi auto tranny but i would check craigslist for somthing like that.

thanks. I might have to check into that. How about a 10hp subaru robin? I can get one of them for about the same price as the animal.

I couldent tell you Briggs has always been reliable for me so i dont see any thing wrong with the animal but i have never used a subaru What HP is the animal putting out compared to the the subaru robin. Also compare the "CC" to eachother. When you start getting in the 8 and higher HP the PTO enlarges to 1" if your current motor is 3/4" your touque converter will not fit. Tell me the info you collect on the engines and i will tell you what i think to help with the decision.

Ok, i thought the two together would be killer but if you guys dont reccomend it scratch that MMarty. Use a TC or a tranny but not both. If you end up getting an engine with a tranny, if you want to sell the TC, PM me i may need one soon:)

Since I LOVE being the Devil's Advocate, I'm going to hop the fence here...

I won't be so quick to condemn the concept of a CVT combined with a multiple-speed transmission. It may be a foreign concept to us on the forum, but I draw your attention to the following:

I have a recently-aquired 1999 Kawasaki KVF400 Prairie 4x4 ATV. It does have a CVT. The gearbox boasts two ranges, Low and High. So what's that? A multi-speed transmission combined with a CVT. Now, you don't "go through the gears" while driving- you select Low or High and go. But it IS a multiple speed transmission. So what if it had MORE than two "ranges", "ratios" or "speeds"? What if it had 3 or 4?

Personally, I think this is feasible. However, a few things need to be considered.

*No other clutching method used- A mechanical clutch, belt tensioner, or centrifugal clutch would be redundant at the least, if not troublesome

*CVT would have to be upstream of the transmission for proper clutching operation

*Very careful consideration must be given to gearing. If not, one or more ranges may be unuseably high or low. Of course, this may not be that much of a problem if several ranges remain useful

*Depending on the transmission (and gearing), shifting on the fly, or "going through the gears" may not be possible. Like my ATV, it may simply be "grab a gear and go". Given the range available with the CVT, I don't necessarily see this as a problem. See above notes regarding careful gearing selection.

Discuss.

(Sorry if this extends too far beyond the original topic, but I felt it was worth exploration)

:iagree: I would like to see this done, could be a very useful and fun machine if done properly!

One other thing I will mention is that if you have a 10hp engine, then a CVT, then a multi-speed transmission, the multi-speed transmission must be rated for much more than 10hp.

What I'm saying is that you have to keep in mind that in most cases the engine's torque would be multiplied by about three before it even gets to the multi-speed transmission.

I honestly dont know i had never heard anything like it but i thought it would really be cool. If MMarty wants to try it i think it would work well just from the basic standpoint.

It sounds like a good Idea but it is beyond what I'm trying to do right now. I want a automatic system so I will keep the comet 30 torque converter. I am needing suggestions on a good engine with good torque and speed. I am 200lbs and would like to be able to climb some rolling hills and get down the road.
