Id go with a 14hp engine because if you want to climb and hit about 30. a 10 might do the trick too. I have a 5 hp and i can hit about 30 but i am on flat land so i did not gear for tourque.

I got my eye on a 420cc predator from harbor freight. I know it has a 1 inch shaft and my current comet 30 has a 3/4 but I think I can buy just the one torque converter pulley that has a 1 inch hole. I'll have to check on that.

I would not recommend a comet 30 for over 10hp.
My recommendation: strip down the Robin, rebuild and replace any damaged or worn parts, if any Honda gx200 parts fit, you could install them (e.g. Flat top piston) and install a header and a good air filter.

The predator 420 will require a different mounting pattern

If you really want a new engine, and you are up for the different pattern the 420 would be ok. But you would probably then want a comet 40 and jackshaft.

You could look around for 8-10hp engines on craigslist and eBay. A Honda gx270 or a Briggs could be a good choice.

A former member on here has tried running a comet 30 clone on a robin subaru 9hp, it did not work out. Even with the lowest gearing that engine ripped those little belts to shreds, if you get the 10hp you will probably want a better torque converter. The 10hp will also have a different mounting pattern than the robin engine you have.

Please do not throw out the robin to get a clone, gy6, or an animal. Look into the robin engine and do some simple diagnostics on it first. If there is something wrong with it then you can fix it (have you checked to see the torque converter is functioning properly?). A robin EX engine wouldn't be known to die so easily unless totally abused.

Of course the other option is that even with the robin at full capacity you think it isn't enough power, In which case you will probably want to go get a new engine and clutch (may I suggest the robin 10hp and a comet 40 or 500 cvt?)

EDIT: keep in mind that even if you can manage to put 10hp through a 30 series, you will likely still need to buy a new driver clutch. The 6.5 likely has a 3/4" shaft, and anything 8hp and up probably has a 1" shaft.

Thanks a bunch for all the input. I will do a compression test on the robin and see from there. I will also go through the converter and make sure it is still adjusted right. I do know the kart has been run to death all it's life. The original owner is a friend of my older brother and is a crazy sob. Then his kids ran it (also crazy sobs) Now I have it (crazy sob).

Your engine might just be low on power because the valves need adjusting. I'd suggest you try that first, here's a video showing how:

Is your air filter clean?

If you haven't changed the oil already, some fresh 10-30wt. oil might just help restore a bit more power too.

Your engine has a compression release feature for easier starting, so it'll be completely normal for your compression test readings to be extremely low. I wasn't able to find instructions on how to accurately test compression on your Robin Subaru, but you might find info about that in this
