New member here! Been following this forum for a while and now need some help. I have a carter with a Tecumseh 6hp engine. Was having a bunch of issues that were all carb related. Cleaned it spotless, replaced the worn throttle cable, and she's purring now... At least until you floor it. It takes right off then Boggs way down then speeds up again and and Boggs again and over and over. I discovered that the little shaft coming out of the engine that hooks to the throttle arm is turning back on its own. Is something internally causing this to not stay at full throttle?? Even with the pedal fully depressed it still wants to constantly throttle up and down. I'm stumped. The engine is the OHH60. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. Have a look at a few of these links and post some pics of your linkages. We can only help if we can see what you have

Generally speaking, surging or hunting (the situation you're describing) is caused by a lean fuel mixture; it's possible the jet is now a touch too small...

That
little shaft coming out of the engine that hooks to the throttle arm
is the governor arm; it's a catch 22; the lean condition is causing the carb to throttle down but the throttle down is causing the governor to over-react...

Right, it's the governor. So can anything be done to fix it? Aside from replacing the engine.

Wrong...It is more likely that main jet has to be opened up slightly. 5 minutes work. See post #3 by Fabroman..."surging or hunting (the situation you're describing) is caused by a lean fuel mixture..."
small *** drill bits
main jet
Governor has no effect on fuel\air mix.

Well I meant that part I was describing is the governor, not the problem. But yeah I'll check that out. I know carbs pretty well so I should be able to do this. Hopefully that's the whole issue, that'd be fine by me😀

Honestly I found it easier without the governor but the surge is a fuel flow issue. I found carbs for 19-20$ on Ebay and they work great.I build them and spin them up had a rod problem but have the rod failure figured out.

Run without if you take the side cover off it will come off with pliers and force. It does leave the rod the gov gear runs on thats fine. Then you have the governor arm and lever. Leave it or take it out.If you take it out you will probably have it torn down.clean the hole with brake clean then dry.Take a tube of black RTVand put it up to the hole and squeeze. It will seal that hole after it drys. Ok the carb problem, get it running without the air cleaner then about half throttle put your hand over the carb and bog it down but let up intime for it to recover. This normally clears up any issues on my race motors. Some will say dont because the rod will break. Dont rev without a load and keep plenty of oil in it.Change your oil regularly because it will eat the big end off the rod. Ive figured out the solution for the Tecumseh breaking rods. Ill let you know my secret in a few days if it works. Tecumseh does not allow for enough oil passages for the rod end

Ok whats the big deal pushing the envelope? No govenor .why have one. ?
Take out the junk I build these to race no warranty in racing. So why not get what you can. Just because you dont do It doesn't make it wrong. This is a do it yourself forum is it not. Many years as an engine builder spinning small block chevys 9500rpms so why not take the underdog and build it to be out front. Not crazy just dont like limits. We would still be driving across the USA if the Wright bros only kept there ideas on bicycles.

JD, there's two important things you will eventually come to realise about this forum:

1. There are quite a few members who dislike Tecumseh engines as they are known to be troublesome (the engines, not the members); I'm not one of them but, I have found their carbs to be a bit temperamental. Since you've discovered a carb that works on them, you may become a valuable asset to the forum...

2. Doug (poboy kartman) is just plain nuts, no other way to say it. He sometimes adds quite valuable information but, for the most part, he's the "court jester" (for lack of a better term...), the comic relief...

Jd kirk... I like your way of thinking. I too build engines, but car engines. Right now I'm building an ls2 for my camaro. I hate governors. I already basically bypassed it. I ran solid throttle linkage lines instead of springs. Unfortunately this doesn't allow for very good adjustment. This is a customer kart. The throttle linkage linkage was gone. This is what we're looking at so far.

That contraption is not all me. Keeping costs at an absolute minimum for a customer, what would you do with this bs? Thanks man.

Soon as I can I will send you a pic on how I use a 7$ bicycle cable kit and get 4 throttle cables. Depending on your length. I also will show the carburetor I bought that doubles yours now and will bolt on without modifying your intake but thats no fun. My intake is about paper thin.
