. I have been using 2.5mm diameter rods. They are E6013 rods,

You haven't mentioned what guage steel you're using (not that I can see anyway) but, IIRC, the diameter of the welding rod should be smaller than the guage of the material (but I can't remember how much smaller...)

For this type of project, I would try for 1/2 the thickness of the matl. to be joined.

I wouldn't worry too much about unsightly welds, that's why grinders were invented :D

:lolgoku::funnypost:

It is 2mm thick

Switch to 1.5mm rod, and you'll have a much easier time of it. If the price isn't to high for you, I'd recommend keeping at least two different dia. rods around so you can select the more appropriate one for the job at hand in the future..... Pat

Thanks for the advice. Even though rods are a bit expensive, I will get a pack of 1.5mm rods. I never really thought of what a difference the different sizes would make

I will be getting my wheels sometime this week from Daniel. He has kindly made hubs for me as well.

Thanks Daniel. This build would not be getting done without you :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Good Grief 4 months for a adaptor - Paul did not say service was this good in Pietermaritzburg. At least it mean I can kick back and theres no rush:wai::funnypost:

Yeah, I got a buddy that owns a machine shop to make me an adaptor for a carb of mine. Because he was doing it for free, he took forever to do it. My engine rebuild was on hold for nearly 4 months

Obviously, this isn't the guy that took 4 months to make a carb adaptor wrong, is it?

Where else on the internet can I find a group of people from around the globe who can razz each other this hard, and still look forward to trying to meet, face to face? It makes me dream that the first steps to world peace might happen in my life time after all.......:cheers2::cheers2::popcorn:

I should hopefully be getting a parcel from Daniel this week. Here is a pic or two of some of the goodies. Hubs, rims, bearing hangers, and some front fork parts.

:thumbsup:

Update:

I managed to get a little time to weld the bearing hangers onto the frame this weekend. Sunday was terrible weather so I didn't get any further.

I need to mount the tyres onto the rims now.

OK....well I didn't take the hard way. I actually went the incredibly easy way and GSETDIFM (sorry Tony). I just had to pay them and it was done. :D:D

Hopefully this weekend I have a roller!!

Paul, I'm glad that things are moving forward for you on this project. I also know that some members of the forum (starts with a "T"....) may flame me for agreeing with you about farming out certain aspects of a project....

Looks good so far. Have you had a chance to play with a smaller dia. welding rod yet?

:thumbsup::cheers2::popcorn: Pat

Guys, jokes :surrender:... Paul knows what I think... (I hope :worried2: )

Yes, I "outsourced" the bending of my frame but, only after I'd exhausted all other avenues as far as doing it myself (I couldn't afford $600 minimum for a tube bender) &, it was just that, the bending, I had to design it, I drew up the plans so that the guy bending it knew what he was doing & then I had to weld it all together...

I'll let you all in on a little secret: One of my front tyres has a kink in one of the beads so it wouldn't seat properly, which was making inflation difficult. Again, after exhausting all other avenues, I took it to a tyre shop (who has a bigger compressor &, therefore, more of an air blast than my compressor could provide) who inflated it for me...

Although this is DIY go karts, I have no problem with anyone outsourcing (to a point), some people simply don't have the tools or resources to do it themselves BUT, when someone takes their toy to a shop to change the oil & spark plug, that's not DIY...

I'm the type of person who would rather do it myself than have someone else do it for me, it just makes me feel better, in a number of ways. I also have the education/knowledge to do so, in most cases so, I sometimes forget that not everyone has the same background & mindset as I do.

Rant over, carry on :D
