My First Go Kart Build

Hello All Newbie Here.

I have just decided to build my first go kart. I need to ask a few questions first.

1) I have an old clinton engine I think is 5HP and it is a 4 stroke, I think it is around 100cc or more but I was wondering what RPM I would get out of it if I took the govener off it.

2) I have a clutch with 20 teeth on it and was just wondering what would be the best number of teeth on the axle gear.

3) Would I be able to use a brake disc and caliper off a push bike on my kart?

I have done alot of planning so far and drew out the plans in 1/5 scale so I know how big everything is.

2. You want AT LEAST a 4:1 ratio, so you need at least an 80 tooth sprocket. It would be easier to get another clutch with 12 teeth so you can get a better ratio like 5:1 or 6:1. If you're staying with that clutch use a jackshaft so you can get a double reduction.

I am only 17 and that is the only engine I have got and I cant afford a new one. So...Will this engine be suitable and what RPM will I get out of it.

if you cant afford a new motor buy used or sell the clinton to buy one you could get a pretty penny for it if you find the right buyer like Kenny_McCormic said dont abuse a piece of history like that

Taking the governor off is abuse, as this engine (or any governed engine) was designed to be used with governor in place.
Figure that it's lifespan will be a fraction of it's original intent.
The fact that it is collectible and a piece of history, makes it all the worse.
If a rod goes, you got nothin'. Possibly not even a parts engine.
If this engine were complete and everything intact, my guess as to value would be in the $100 to $300 range.
Last Clinton was made in early '80's (???). Judging by pics posted, yours is much older than that.
Only on rare occasion is mine kicked on. When I bring it to shows, I mix the oil and gas using the original non detergent oil called for at a 16:1 ratio.
The exhaust smell is more than remarkable and will jog anybody's memory over the age of 50.

I don't specifically recall. I think around $80 from Ebay.
Got it as a box of incomplete parts. Took a couple of years of parts hunting to complete restoration. Paint and decals are original. If cleaned and repainted, engine would likely lose half of it's value. Estimated worth is around $300 to $400.
Genuine Clinton NOS (new old stock) parts have been used throughout.
I was very lucky to come across a complete service manual that covers the entire Clinton line from early '50's through mid '60's.
Not many folks around that know (or even remember) this engine.

wow i bet you got some sort a acomplishment once you finished that
ofourse i dont remember it mostly bc i was born in the 90's wayyyyyy after that last one was made, which was in the early 80's correct?
i just know that those things a piece of history and can fetch a pretty penny under the right cercumctances

I think you guys are right as I was given this engine as a present and it even has a flexi-drive hedge trimmer to attatch to it. I was thinking of showing this engine and now I probably will.

I will look for another dirt cheap engine to use on a go kart!!!

Good idea! Craigs list is great for budget beater motors.

i wouldnt suggest taking the govener off cause then there is a really high chance of blowing your engine!
