Hello, new to the forum. I need a little help. My brother got this Murray hard drive go cart on a trade. Back in the day we had go carts with clutch and chain. The hard drive has a belt system, I 'm clueless about this setup? I 'm trying to help my brother to get this going for his little boy. Here is where it gets tricky. It has no engine and the previous owner must have removed the torque converter set up? It has a 36 tooth sprocket and belt pulley connected together on the axle. There is nothing on the engine mount? My question is can we simply remove the 36 tooth sprocket and get maybe a 60 tooth sprocket and use a clutch and chain? He just bought a predator 212 engine. Any help would be appreciated.

Just so you know:
Keep the torque converter and find the correct belt. It’s a heavy kart, unless you want to go very slow you won’t want to use a clutch, especially with an off-road kart like that.
Just buy a cheap eBay 30 series tc and a ~60 tooth sprocket and you should be set.

Yes this is a heavy cart. But like i said, it has nothing on it now. No brackets nothing but a base plate for the engine. I know nothing about a belt system. I can't find any pictures how it was from the beginning. The 36 tooth sprocket/brake disk seems to be factory?

I say the same thing. Get an eBay 30 series tc and slap it on the predator he has then throw the assembly onto the base plate
+the chain and throttle cable if needed.
Does nobody looks stuff up anymore? Literally if you google “go kart drive train” the two options that come up are a clutch or torque converter.

Some pics might help us help you. A TC will always be better, but if you do go to a centrifugal clutch, you will have to gear it low because of the size of the kart. You might need a lot more than 60T (like maybe 72 on the axle and a 10T clutch)
First off it's not my cart so I would have to travel to get pics. I did look at the 30 series tc on ebay and I think it will work. It does have a 36 tooth sprocket left on the axle by the previous owner. Will my brother need a bigger sprocket? I simply am trying to help him get it ready for his little boy. We both had go carts when we were young but they had a clutch and chain, I never used a tc before. His little boy is starting first grade this coming year. With that said he is very much all boy. I have a 125cc atv he rides and he rides the snot out of it. He can handle the cart with no problem. He never rides without a helmet and always adult supervision.

You will not be able to just slap an engine and torque converter on that Hard Drive. It takes extensive modification just to instal a bigger sprocket. It’s a lot of work. If you’re serious about getting it going I can post pics of mine. Otherwise, you will need all the original parts to get it going again.

Um hi there buddy you misunderstood what I said. I said to get a tc if he wants and google it, MEANING TO GOOGLE THE TORQUE CONVERTER

More wrong info. To instal the 60 tooth sprocket on the Murray Hard Drive you will need to modify the frame. And it’s a big mod. Just another example of misinformation being given. We’re all wrong sometimes bud

Oh I read it. I never saw anybody suggest frame mods were needed, nor that even the 54 tooth sprocket would hit the frame, nor that the engine plate would need modifications or the brake system. I also did not see me repeating myself.

Not to beat a dead horse but I never even mentioned the frame in my first post. Get over yourself.
OK now that that's over, I went to my brothers tonight and we pulled the axle out and everything on it off. ( what a job). It had a belt pulley on the axle? It still had a bar code sticker on it?? If my eyes are seeing this correct all I need is a 60 tooth sprocket. I have plenty of room? it has a band type brake and not brake pads as shown in the pics.
Do you have a picture? I want to see this belt pulley lol

The sprocket will hit your frame. Here’s a pic of mine with a 54 on it. It’s not physically possible to put a 60 tooth on it....simply. You will also need to make some kind of riser plate to raise the engine so that the torque converter clears the frame in the back.
