Oh, looks like I will have to take off the side cover. The push rods just won't fit. I still have absolutely no idea what I'm working with. I'm just trying to put rods in holes.

Hey, thank you, random website, for the explanation...
"A push rod is a component of the valve train of certain piston engines. its function is essentially to push the valve open.Rods used in an Over Head Valve engine to open and close the valves. They are moved by the cam and are about 8" long with a diameter of around 1/4". One end is pushed up by the cam and the other end makes contact with the rocker arms which rotates and pushes the valve open."

I'll do some work for a while... Post later.

Just unloosen the nuts that are used to set the valve lash. This will allow the stoppers in the rocker arms to open enough so that you can lift them to put the push rods in the dips in the rocker arms. Look up a video on changing valve springs to help clarify how to do this.

I'll buy everyone warm flat beers!

You wont need to do all these step, just the end ... But it shows what is going on.

B in this pic gives an idea of what parts are called. Lifters, pushrods, ....
Edit: In pic it is called valve filter, but I think it is commonly referred to as "Lifter" (not sure if this is a typo?)
Edit: Lash is set where it says "Valve Clearance"

The push rods on Hondas and clones are like 5 -5.75" IIRC

In between the push rod and the cam is a Lifter. They like to fall out when taking the side cover off. Which then requires taking valve cover off. Some sticky Permatex assembly lube helps keep them up in there..

You got this.

Craaaaaaaaaaaaaap.

I put the pushrods back together perfectly. Everything was fine, everything was aligned....

So I try to start it up, after completely putting it back together, and... The pull cord locks up. That circular plastic piece inside, right on the pull cord, got stuck, I heard something break too.

Friday, I'm going to Portland. If I can find the receipt, I may be able to exchange it at HF. I've decided to just fix this kart up and sell it, to get something better.

I don't feel like enough of a mechanic to remove a governor anymore...

You can't give up. I'm sure there's hundreds of Murray kart threads on here (I'm new) but yours is the one I'm following since it's all fresh and new and relevant. Don't know anything about these karts; seen a few around, but from my experience Murray makes only lawnmowers and bicycles so this is my familiarization with 'em.

Forge on ahead, young grasshopper! :D

"Thanks! But the thing is, I just removed the governor, and the governor arm. "

Did you remove everything?

Meaning did you tap for and insert a 1/4 - 20 bolt in the top of the engine where the external governor arm connects to the governor internals?

If you remove everything, there should be a hole in the top of the engine where a hockey stick shaped rod/lever used to extend out of the crankcase. This hockey stick shaped rod needs to be cut to be removed.

Maybe I missed the specific details on how you removed the governor?
.
If not removed, that arm may cause issues if it is free to swing around inside the crankcase?

I've read people leaving it in, but can't see a way where it won't cause issues. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems it would get it the way of the crank shaft.

But if you do return it.... You know the drill.

Completely disassemble first.
Take everything apart and take pictures while doing so.
Harvest all the gaskets and send to me. Also get me the connecting rod and piston with rings.
Then reassemble and see what you learned.

JK, I only joke... I do not condone fraudulent returns to HF.

Hahahaha! Thanks guys.

I removed everything, and threaded a hole and put in the bolt where the governor arm was.

Hopefully at HF they don't notice that the manual throttle arm is gone...

Kart's nearly finished again. I need one more can of paint, and two wheels for the front, then I may sell this kart. It's so much cheaper to buy a kart with a live axle already than to buy a live axle setup and build it.

I can go back in time and fix that.
At one fell swoop!

3 or 4 fail swoops.
1.Edit 2 posts (at least):devil2:
2.Drop off a C-note to HF
3. Ask Jesus to forgive you.:innocent:

Or Skip 1 and 2 got straight to 3!
I fell swoop.
