Making garage more hospitable towards tools and projects?

oh yeah and usually the walls in a house are not insulated anyway

Maybe down there where you live, If you had no insultation out here in Canada you would freeze to death. -35 to -40 winters and summer goes up to + 35 to +40

And Freakboy, yea, wiping blood off is a plus... I cannot tell you how many times I have left my hand on the table, while going to see something under the table, and when I looked up, it was within millimetres of the blade.... opps...

I tend to keep my body parts away from moving items... especialy when im using a bench grinder on a really low waist high bench... or using a lathe when its about waist high....

Yea, we live about 400 meters from the see on top of a hill, so everything we have rusts like buggery. And considering there is some pricey gear in the shed; like the mill, lathe and drill press we have found that using used engine oil applied with a brush works perfect.

That would work if I were doing primarily metal work. But oil is a bugger to clean off wood, unless you specificly want black wood... or maybe that sounds too much like buggery... lol

same boat as rusty but we dont seem to have the problem can u wax the band saw each day
and cut a big bit of wood each day as at school the band saw is never rusty i guess it is cause it is used so ofen

I finally got the go ahead to insulate the garage. So thats my first step. I would like to find out from you guys the best, CHEAP way of doing it. Thanks. (Rust-oleum epoxy paint, but unsure for insulatin.)

This is a concrete wall your talking about, right? read this. Insulating alone wont do anything to prevent/slow rust. Since part of the garage is below the ground line, I'd suggest sealing the wall with something like this.

That stuff looks good, but expensive, for the coverage. I would need like 3 gallons(20something X 10 X 8)

Insulation aint cheap either. where do you get 20x10x8? It should be like $70. Good luck insulating cheaper than that.

Question tho, does that stuff insulate from heat/cold, or just moisture. Because not only do I want rid of moisture, but I want rid of the cold in the winter... its no fun, and downright bloody dangerous to work with gloves and a winter coat...

The sealer is to keep out the moisture which seeps through the concrete, you would then use foam-board type insulation over top of that.

My neighbor jimmy rigged some insulation in his garage. First he painted with water blocking paint, it's partly underground. He put up studs (2x6's) and then laid in rolls of fiberglass insulation. He covered them with drywall and then put up pegboard. It's nice for tool organization.

2x6's insulation some cheap sheetrock and pegboard. In Pittsburgh there's a place called Construction Junction that sells unused or salvaged materials for dirt. Packs of 25yr shingles are $4, doors are $10-20, tile $.05each. Look for places like this near you and build up supply over time. It's a great place to go if you can get past the volumes of hybrids in the parking lot.
