From my standpoint (as usual I may be wrong) sounds like your engine is lean on low speed and rich on high speed.
No I think you're right on with the hunch, and I think my messing up the diaphram lever setting is causing this. I'm going to pull it apart again tomorrow, take some pix of the chamber housing and see what the general concensius is on what IS the floor of the chamber? It's stepped in many areas, enough to confuse simple minds such as mine.

Ooooh! Crazycart! Sorry, I've been making dinner and running back and forth, and i forgot to answer your question about the belt. I (DUMB_SS) ordered a 1 3/8" belt for a clutch that uses a 1 1/4" belt... so no matter how loose the belt is, the clutch is always pinching it enough to grab it. I'll save this belt for Ed's Kart, and when I get the new one, I'll go back though and set all the clearances, gaps, whosie-whatchits, etc....

Jeez, I kinda feel like that guy a couple of years ago who said to The World, "Mission Accomplished", only to STILL be knee-deep in the "stuff"!....

YOU GUYS ARE THE BOMB! So far, I tried a combo of everyone's advice, and I'm making progress. I started the motor, set the idle to where the motor was running at it's quickest RPM, was able to get it to idle @ 1500 rpm (specs 1500-1800), and then I read somewhere that, as it's idling, mess with the high-speed needle. (If affects idle, something is really wrong). So far, so good. I was so happy about getting it to run this good, I had to type a THX to ya all.:wai:

Tillotson stuff
Possibly you've seen this already. I realize that your model is not HL, but the fundamentals still apply.
It shows theory of operation, adjustments, and troubleshooting.
I'm glad it's working out for ya'. It's a great feeling when things just come together which sometimes produces unexpected results.
An aside:
I purchased 2 more HL239b's. I love these carbs. I'm looking forward to making a dual carb setup.

I will admit the tilly's are good for what they are, but the Mikuni round/flatslides are MUCH better. Get a mikuni you wont regret it.

From a tuning standpoint, I HATE SLIDE CARBS. Spending an afternoon juggling jets when I could spend 10 minutes with a screwdriver is not my idea of fun.

I find that the tilly's come out of tune easy, and just arent as good in general as mikuni's.

I have been thinking, why has nobody made a high speed needle kit for slide carbs? Just make a new bowl with the needle screw and put a jet in 30 or so sizes too big. Never actually had a mikuni slider apart but im very familiar with keihin round slides and it could easily be done with the keihin.

I agree that the Mikunis (once set up) are a great carb, but getting there........ !@#$%!!
I'm giving the two Tillys their shot first. I double checked, and the original carb is a HD86a and the extra is a HD45a. Good luck telling the difference, because so far, it's just the throttle shaft where the cable hooks up, and that's it. I think between the two of them, I should get a decent working carb. Still no new belt yet. I feel like Charlie Brown waiting for that valentine from the Little Red-Headed Girl!
Good grief!

Hey guys. Yet ANOTHER brief update:
(At least this time the news is good.) Just for S&G, I threw the dirty, un-serviced HD45 that I won fresh off of Ebay onto the motor this morning. Ran beautiful. (WTF?) So I took it off and put the throttle and choke shafts from the 86 on it, put the fuel pump block/diaphrams from the 86 on it, put it back on the motor, and wow. It'll idle down to a steady 1200 rpm now, and although it's a liiiiittttlllle bit boggy opening it up, it wants to shred belts when you open it up. This thing is going to be sick if moves under it's own power! .....now just waiting for that $%$#*&!! belt!
