i am building a mini chopper for my grandson. iam looking fora kickstarter plans or does amy body how i can make one for a briggs and stratton motor any ideas will helpful thanks kenny

I haven't seen a kick start for a briggs, but if someone can dig one up I'd like to see it. But if you think about the direction that the flywheel rotates, I think it might not work.. hmm.

I have several Briggs & Stratton engines dating back to 1936 up to about 1947 which have a "kick start" as originally designed. There are some out there that used "lever start" and "crank start". There is no practical way to adapt these to current engines that I can envision without some radical design change to recoil and/or blower housing. A couple of my starters were broken or bent at some point and re-welded/straightened. I can snap a pic and post it tomorrow so you can get an idea of what you are up against. Out of curiosity...why do you want to do this?

i thought about this a bit and i think ive come up with something.

when you take the recoil off a standard flathead briggs,there is a freewheel type thing(dont know exact name)that when you turn it right the small balls inside of it shift positions and "lock" it so it turns over,and when you turn it left,they dont,this allows the engine to run with the recoil.if you could weld a kick lever onto the small freewheel and hook up a spring to it so you could kick it down and the spring would pull it back up....just an idea

Take note that there is a gear ratio. 16 teeth on driver and 12 teeth on crankshaft (pic on right). If you directly connected starter to crankshaft (via recoil ratchet) it may not produce enough rotation to actually start. Might only get about 1/2 revolution (if that). It might start if caught on compression cycle but I have my doubts.
When I kick this one over it will spin about 3 or 4 complete revolutions.

They were an "option and the last one i saw 1 ago or so went for around 150$.

I once thought about using a rear bicycle sprocket on the engine and small length of chain leading to a partial front bike sprocket using half of the pedal/crank assembly as the start lever. This would probably give you the correct amount of revolutions per kick...and a cheap solution

My dad has one of those tec kick starters and a never ran tec 5hp(new short block old everything else) from the same time period. Didn't know they were worth so much!

yes they made them in the 60's and they come up on ebay fromt ime to time. Hegar made them and a couple other brands. first pic is an old motor with a factory one. second is a homemade one notice no gear reduction from what i recall he said it didnt work too well. Third pic is what im going to try and make one out of when i get the time. Its a steering gear from an old ride on lawn tractor. I dont have any pics of the old aftermarket ones. Check out oldminibikes.com theres a few discussions on them.

steering gear..... Hey I have one of those! Thats a great idea!

are you using it with the briggs ratchet starter thingy?

I'd have to figure out a way to disengage it on a honda motor.

I would bet adapting that steering gear idea or something like it would give at least 2 turns or more.... I'm gonna try that when I get some time.
