you could keep the rope. hollow out the recoil wheel to ride the kicker's shaft, haven't thought it all the way through yet! ah hah! kicker will have one way bearing as well as the recoil so that they are independent.
Well I was tinkering with the kick start idea and decided to use the pile of bicycle parts I have. It's a little crude but if you like crazy mechanical looking things It'll work. I still have to add some stops and a spring, but it works very smooth and you can get enough of a kick out of it to get multiple spins.![]()

yeah when I make the stops for it i'm going to have it disengage the little sprocket. I was worried that when I mount this on the modified clone I'm building the RPMs may be too much for the bike sprocket.
I need to find a coil spring somewhere so I don't have a big streched sping lookin' extra ridiculous. I was thinking about looking around the junkyard but I can't think of anything on a car that would use a coiled spring............ maybe the guts out of a car door like the window mechanism....
The only thing that really worries me is the tube on the flywheel that is welded to the sprocket is a bike peg and I had to cut it to length, so I hope that my square is true enough so that thing don't fly apart on me! That would hit right under the leg!
Here are some pics of a minichopper I made about 5 years ago, with a kickstarter installed. It uses a 3hp briggs motor. I made almost everything on it including the kickstart. The kickstart is attached to a driven jackshaft with a 1.2:1 ration between the motor and the output shaft. There is a standard 3/4" centrifugal clutch that drives the final drive chain. This configuration also ends up increasing the stall speed of the clutch for better takeoff. I used to sell plans for the kickstarter assemblies but due to the amount of machining involved it's beyond most home builders. If anyone is interested I can try and find the plans and post them.
Skid, that looks great!!! But I'm having trouble wrapping my head around something, I need you to explain. With the chain attached to the "big" sprocket, how is there enough room in the chain for the little sprocket's teeth? My mind says there's not enough room. So my first thought was "extra wide chain?", and my next thought was, "Well, the chain's welded on the big sprocket, so it doesn't NEED to have it's teeth in there, so grind them off!"
Am I hitting the crack pipe here, or was there an issue there, and how did you solve it?
