Today's update. More cutting and welding. Started to mockup rear axle and plan that part of the frame. I also blasted and painted the front rims.

Simple is my forte!

I got the front tires mounted on the 2-piece rims...man that was a pain in the butt. The second one went much better than the first.

Started the fab on the rear engine/drive section and I ordered the pillow blocks that were suggested to me on another thread. I HATE waiting for parts in the mail, I thrive on instant gratification.

Hopefully this weekend I can start working on the front suspension. I'm now torn between single and double A-Arm.

Maybe someone can post some examples of simple spindle ideas for double a-arms.

Welded the rear frame section. There are some supports that I'll add later, but I want to get the pillow block bearings first. It's starting to take shape. I'm really temped to make rear suspension as well, but that can always be added later.

I was able to get more done today, but I didn't take many pictures. Bought a clutch and some chain. Also got some materials to build some spindles. We'll see how those turn out. The picture shows the beginning fab work on one of the spindles.

I also made a motor mount plate out of some 0.25 steel plate, but I'm waiting to weld it in until the bearings arrive next week.

edit: quick question... what kind of welder are you using? beads look good!

Thanks Wheels! I'm trying not to let this project become a permanent resident in the shop like my 55 Packard.

quick question... what kind of welder are you using? beads look good!

Thanks Wheels! for most of the frame I've been using my mig welder because it's so quick. It's just a Century 120 volt machine, but it works great for this 14ga tubing. For the more precise parts like the spindles I'm using my tig welder, a Miller Dynasty 200.
I've been checking your stuff out and you sure know your way around a torch.

Little more progress in the last few days.
I got the bearings in the mail and started to mount the axle, jackshaft and motor plate. The jackshaft was longer than what I needed so I trimmed it to size. Cut the chain to fit, but I still need an extra master link. Now I have to figure out what I'm going to do for a brake.
I also got the spindles welded up the rest of the way. I'm using some grade 8 bolts that came with a gold coating. Zinc I believe. I tossed them in a bucket with some acid and boiled off the coating so my welds wouldn't get contaminated, and I wouldn't have to breath those fumes. I welded the 5/8" to the 3/4" all the way around and they actually stayed pretty straight. Now I'm starting to lay out the A-arms.
Heading out of town this weekend, no more work til next week.

Made the first 2 arms for the front suspension. It's all 1" 14ga erw. I made the arms adjustable length by welding a nut on the end of the tubing and a bolt on the bushing that will bolt to the spindle.

I welded angle iron to the welding table to make the jig for the arms. They wont be perfect, but they should be close enough.

I need to make the other two, then I can make the frame for the front end.

Made some more progress. The other two arms are completed and the front frame is built. I got the right side mounted and now need to work on the left side. Once that's done, I'll start working on the shock mounts. Can't wait for this to be a rolling chassis.
