Hi all,

Inspired by "Go Kart NZ`s" project - http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=27142, I have decided to start work on my Drifter Go-Kart.

My plans are to lengthen it, swap from hand controlled to foot controlled, New steering wheel, Bigger tyres, new exhaust and air filter (hopefully).

I`m going to keep the engine. :wai: It`s a genuine Honda GX160, (not the clone ones that you usually find on these).

There will be some Progress soon.

(Sorry about the bad quality pictures)

Hi,

I think I`m going to buy Bolt-on kit 1 from AGK. Only thing is, how am I going to fit the air filter onto the engine so that it clears the frame (see 1st post for pics)

Honestly, I don't think it will be a problem, once you remove the airbox, you should have plenty of room; if not, you can get filters with an angled neck or attachments to extend the neck...

Seriously, there are so many ways to solve this problem it's not even a problem...

Go ahead & buy the kit, just don't install the valve springs...

Right well on second thoughts, AGK is in Dollars so I`ve found a UK website - http://www.prokartengineparts.com

They do do turning kits but I`m just going to upgrade the engine bit by bit.

I`m going to start with the exhaust which they say adds 1hp to the engine which is good  I do have an exhaust flange (+ bit of pipe that not needed) that I can modify to use with this pipe - http://www.prokartengineparts.com/custom_eng_exhausts.html (6th one down)

Then I`m going to work on the air filter side of things.
I`m wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to a Mikuni 22mm Carb, what difference does it make? Also can you remove the govenor and keep the stock flywheel without it flying apart?

Odd, been kind of quiet out on the ole forum lately.

I have had that kart before as well. Like the Honda Clone, that kart has had 20 different names based on the manufacturer. Mine had a Black Clone, rounded racing tires, and tons of extra parts. This is the first I have seen with a Honda engine and some genuine looking racing slicks.

Now, I have tried many things in trying to get the max performance out of these engines. The 6.5HP @3300 RPM will become about 7.5-8HP @ 4800-5200 RPM after the governor is removed. The next step would be to get more RPM through stiffer OHV springs and a Cam. Since you have a Honda, you don't have to get a better flywheel that can handle the extra RPM. If you get the extra RPM, then you will need an exhaust header and better carb. It should be noted, you will spend the most money getting that next 2-3 HP and extra 1000-2000 RPM. Odd how people will spend $400 on a $100 motor. Imagine if you just bought an extra motor or three for the same money.

However, all the above mods really address top end speed, not acceleration so much. If you want a good drifter, you need torque. You could spend a whole lot less on the engine mods (specifically the final 2-3HP) and get a TAV2 (or clone version) and do some real tire spinning. Don't get me wrong, the governor on these engines has got to go.......

Yes, a torque converter would be nice. However, there is quite limited space for a TC to go.

Got some progress done today, took the front end off to look at the steering. Also found 2 good front tyres for it but probably won't be using them.

Yeah bud, exams are a pain in the arse! You can find a lot of what your looking for on eBay, affordable go karts is good but it's in dollars, you can always use a conversion on Google, it generally works out cheaper but postage will be sky high. If not there's BMI karts, again in dollars but they have so much stock it's unbelievable! I would say eBay is your best bet but by all means look around, I've come across a few UK based ones but can't remember the names. Good luck and PM me if you need.

Thanks Ollie  I have recieved a bundle of stuff that I ordered:

GX140 Emulsion tube
4 new tyres
4 degree keyway
1" 90 degree bend pipe

Going to my Uncles tomorrow to (hopefully) get an air filter adapter machined.

I`ve also got the seat removed (may be getting another one) and I have installed the emulsion tube along with an 85 Jet from another Engine.

See below for pics ;)

Yeah. I am actually quite excited! Hoping to have it done for Christmas (bar paint) Going to weld up exhaust tomorrow, just wondering if I should use a silencer or anything?

I'm not an expert, but I've read enough on here to know that it's always highly recommended to remove the internals and not simply bypass them.

The governor is designed to handle right around 3600 RPM, and without a governor, valve float usually occurs around 5500 RPM. Basically, the governor will be subjected to 1900 RPM more than it was designed to, making internal failure a very real possibility, causing it to damage other internal components in a disappointing end.

At least I think that's what the experts here will tell you

Yes that is true. I`m just wondering now if I should remove the governor or not, what would be the benefits? Also, what is the benefit of putting a 4/8 degree timing key in it and should I do it?

Yay! Some Progress! :D

Right, progress! :D

Got the back tyres mounted onto the rims, front ones are still to be done.
DSC00303.jpg

Engine removed from frame to inspect clutch and chain and also to work on the engine.
DSC00310.jpg

Exhaust welded up, just used the original flange, cut everything off and welded the 1" pipe to it. Haven`t started her up yet though
DSC00306.jpg

I noticed that at the front of the engine, there is something bolted on (see picture). What is it?
DSC00309.jpg

And btw, for my air filter I`m just going to hack away at the original air filter box and mount an air filter on it.

Also I`m going to remove the governor.

What do ya think?
