stupid time burning update...

With winter well over half over in these thar parts, I'd been sorting through things in preparation to get back to doing my thing.

Racing back on at our local track and my kid will be on her own now with the local team here which she'll be a part of this time around. Full mechanics, help, etc.

This means dad, (me) is really just sitting on his butt most of the time now.

So with the sorting done and my plans made, I figured I'd throw together that pit bike so I have something to do out there.

Ick. Whatevs. it works.

Still, it sure was fun to just pick from my shelves of stuff and throw this together in short order. It's nothing special but it'll work. Gotta find some tank for it & a few things but it's all there.

Oh yes, almost forgot. I have a friend who wanted to get into this so I'll be building basically a test frame for him to try out. It'll just be a throw-down slammed frame with wheels, brakes & a motor. If he likes it, well, then that's two of us middle aged farts and he can mod it any way he wants. I'll give it to him.

Usual sunday around these parts and the continued search has me staring at a local ad for possible parts. It's that not I'll buy any of it but you never know.

Normally I'd throw this in the WTF category but since it's relevant to my usual search, I'll put it in the WTF category HERE.

I can't quite make some of this out. Any thoughts? Golf cart suspension maybe?

Winter HALF OVER? I don't think so.... Redo the math....(Poboy winter calculator available on request) ....but it's barely started here and officially doesn't end until mid March....

EDIT: BTW: I can't tell about that CART.... (maybe if I could see it in WOOD?) .....I could tell....not really good with those metal ones...but it looks a bit flimsy.....(maybe you could find some wood and beef it up?)

How fun! The Poboy winter calculator (available from RonCo or KTel) simply doesn't function here... and never will... cause it don't exist. Below is a picture of what I envision it actually looking like should it exist and I'm wrong.

Race season starts in just 2 months and practice is a month away.

Perhaps you should move! The humidity and all that weird stuff (chiggers) down there is just miserable. Wood huh? I'll show you wood. Kelly Wood What?

Update:

Took a minute & gathered the parts for the Wachtmeister. Tonight, the rear end. Ultimately, I had to order to bearing hangers and track down the brake system spacer that I was missing. Huge thanks to Dennis for the donation brake system.

Here, the rear end, ready to tack weld to the frame. With this setup, it ensures the brake system is flush and square to the hanger when sitting on the frame being tacked.

The wheel arrangement for this are four perfect Manco rims, live axle & all. It takes time to hunt down perfect ones but with all my scavenging, ole Wachtmeister here has quite the set. All 5 Inch wheels but the rear's are bigfoot's, a bit taller than the standard chen shins you find. Perfect. Besides, it has to be right. This is Sarge's Counterpart and all must work. It's lighter than Sarge by 30 lbs.

Anyway, a few pics of an axle... on my floor. Yep.

NOTE: For any new folks that may read this thread, this thread is about a creative endeavor of mine. I build old school go karts with an artistic flair... themed if you will. By old school, I mean the true meaning of old school. (means with what you have... not what you can buy in some kit)

I wish my mind would shut off sometimes. A while back I picked up another manco which was a match for something else I had here. Having two front ends was potentially going to create a version of the Tyrell P34...

But then I said no. Why? Because it's just not creative enough for my tastes. It's been done and a kart replica of one would just be that, a replica.

So, using the same frame idea from said project... how about we find a small metal garbage can... and some other parts... and make something Very... very... different.

I introduce, one of the Kart Rod projects I've started.

Here's some pics to give you an idea of what I'm doing. For those that follow this thread... I'm sure you'll get the idea.

For now, she's called "Loco"

Lunchtime update:

Some sketching & messing around here has yielded an initial form for this beast we'll call "LOCO" for now.

Yes yes, let's mix a train, a 6 wheel kart with 4 front wheels, probably a metal garbage can of sorts... some soup cans for the light & stack... and something else for that back do-hickey-piece.

Update:

On to other things for now while the last idea congeals here.

With a Saturday of nothing to do, something's been on my mind a long time.

Vintage wheels. I cruise ebay often and keep my eyes peeled for certain types of vintage wheels to use... problem is, when you do find them... the vintage market has these suckers off the charts when it comes to price... and a times, they could be rare.

... and that's just life.

So today I wondered if it was possible to use some good old dining room table engineering and come up with a way of using what everyone else is using... and make something that would work as a suitable replacement.

So, some shoe boxes later...

... and we have this.

Hubcaps basically, but they're direct bolt on items for manco and tri-star wheels. Instant go-powers in this example. I build versions for what I had. 4", 5" and 6" mancos, and one for the newer style Tri Stars.

Hm... wonder if there's a market for this.

Next up, the adaptor that allows you to use any Manco Front wheel on the back. A live axle conversion kit.

Update:

It's nice when it all comes together right.

yyyyes, I had to change it. That's how it works out for me.

If I had to add up what just this set of wheels and rear axle costs for the average joe just buying it on ebay, etc... it'd be a bit.

But after years of trading & collecting, just the right parts have landed here to make this a great setup for the only ride worthy of taking on ole Sarge.

Except the wheel adaptors I've made (not finished, just a few holes to drill) and the tires... everything on it is vintage/NOS.

Wachtmeister will rule, trust me.

Next up, off to the laser company for a finishing touch on these babies.

Then it's wait a little for a nice day and fix up a few things.

The exhaust and air intake system design is next.

On a side note, the last 2 pics. The Turbines I'd had a while back. Since I got those, I've acquired a few more making the perfect set. Even though I do fix the ones with chips, I do prefer to have a perfect set and have the fixed chipped ones as backups. So, the wheels for the Baroness are complete. I opted for the bigfoot tire as this thing has an older feel to it, so tall skinny A$$ wheels are in order for the back.

Update:

Lunchtime trip to get a few things then swung by a laser cutting specialty shop to see how much my idea will cost me. Stay tuned on that.

After that, returned home to see the dried results of the turbines for the Baroness. Oh yes, they're going to work well... that, and the "sea of wheels" I've acquired over the winter for all the other projects.

With all the wheels in place, and all the other parts in place minus a small gas tank or two, this year should be stellar.
