I fully understand how gear ratios work. I'm just saying you can't invert them like that. A ratio is a ratio whether it's used for gearing or not -- it's a fundamental mathematical concept, not a loose dictionary definition. And gear ratio is absolutely a 'size' ratio. It always boils down to one length of lever arm acting on another length.
but high and low ratios are determined by SPEED, and that means
with a 3600 rpm engine and a 6:1 ratio you get 600 wheel rpm
and as you can see that 1/6th of the original value (low)
with a 3:1 ratio you'll end up with 1200 wheel rpm, which is 1/3rd of the engine rpm... (high value)
Take a look at that link you just posted again... Standard convention for comparing ratios is to represent them as x:1, correct? Given that gear ratio is defined as input speed to output speed (input : output), when comparing ratios the output speed is kept constant, not the input. You're getting your answer inverted from that.
