but 6:1 is still the lower ratio compared to 3:1 ;)

PS wrong link btw.. we don't talk about size ratios, we talk about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gear_ratio ;)

I fully understand how gear ratios work. I'm just saying you can't invert them like that. A ratio is a ratio whether it's used for gearing or not -- it's a fundamental mathematical concept, not a loose dictionary definition. And gear ratio is absolutely a 'size' ratio. It always boils down to one length of lever arm acting on another length.

but high and low ratios are determined by SPEED, and that means
with a 3600 rpm engine and a 6:1 ratio you get 600 wheel rpm
and as you can see that 1/6th of the original value (low)
with a 3:1 ratio you'll end up with 1200 wheel rpm, which is 1/3rd of the engine rpm... (high value)

Take a look at that link you just posted again... Standard convention for comparing ratios is to represent them as x:1, correct? Given that gear ratio is defined as input speed to output speed (input : output), when comparing ratios the output speed is kept constant, not the input. You're getting your answer inverted from that.

I see you're not good at math or physics.. I'm okay with that;
but let's not spoil Kelly's thread with that.
be welcome to get your next lesson in my PM box, if you're eager to learn ;)

LOL, too funny guys!

Cool factor: CF=1>(b)x5%-6.5+2x(b) Where B=however many beers are in the fridge at the moment MINUS the barometric pressure X the number of RADS (we'll say 700, a lethal dose I think...) my parents in Utah were exposed to in 1950 when they did nuke testing.

So there. (...no, don't do the math, It's malarky.. bet some wise-a$$ will though SID! :))

Note: Malarky=Bullsh1t+A.M.TIMExNUMBER OF BEERS YOU HAD THE NIGHT BEFORE / (divided by) the willingness on a scale of 1 to 10 to look at numbers like this... at the time you realize you're already doing it.

I'll save my mental energy & all that other number-ridden hoo-haw for the track and the real racing.

Sometimes junk holds up better than the over-thought project. This is called fun and expression... just one of my many release mechanisms.

In short, cool factor outweighs actual speed sometimes... though the speed will be shown down the road for those wanting to see.

Meanwhile... a little something else to chew on: Lunchtime sketch!

Bonneville Spirit... With the engine alignment & such done last fall, I figured I'd give it a little flare... not that it needs it, but it's fun to do.

The Routing of the intake scoops to hook up both updraft carbs. Yep.

What to make it out of... Hm...

straight part : pipe (aluminium would look nicer, pvc would be cheaper I guess ;))
bends : vac cleaner hose..
or aluminium flexible conduit... if you want to spend some more money ;)

but it'd look cool I guess :D

Good idea, silver/aluminum would look nice, I agree totally.

Update: Arrival home has some packages in the mail.

1. The filter cup adaptor for Baroness
2. The idler gears for the tensioner on the same.

YAY!

No kiddin Sid. I found a piece of a connecting rod here and envisioned it but I'm gonna pay a visit to Bret anyway.

Update:

Sarge II, German Version. (I guess I'll work on 3 this year)

With the front clip coming together, it was time to find the proper wheels for such a beast.

And of course a good friend has something for me.

A complete set (in need of love of course...) of Vintage Turbine Wheels. Love showing the vintage guys what I do with the most expensive wheels in their world... he he.

(hey... the sarge sports HANDS vintage race wheels, a set of those suckers go for 500 bones on ebay sometimes.)

So.. moving stuff around again, the turbines go on the Baroness, the basics of basics front wheels go on Sarge 2... and....

Well, I'll figure it out. Yep

I love this thread but it moves so fast I can't keep up.

Love turbines! I got plans for some in the future. I'm always on the lookout for em.

Update: Continuing on. Part of the day off waiting to take my kid to get her braces off (A big day for her)... and I'm doing some dishes, when putting away a few pans, I found something in the back that sparked an idea.

Yep.

Update:

Of course I had to grab the dremel, steel wool and some other items.

Not bad really. Not bad at all. They're not perfect by any stretch, but good enough for me.

"These will do nicely" says Kelly to the donating party.

Dang! I need a friend like that... :D Actually, I shouldn't say that. I got a Garrett T3 turbocharger donated my way recently, nicely filling a need without blowing the bank. Good to have friends.

Sweet deal there, a donated item like that goes a long way.

Update: There, all better now.

It's just the initial cleanup to see what we have, but we're in good shape here.

2 Fronts, 2 rears for 1" axle with 3/4 step. Baroness, you got some killer wheels coming baby!

We'll probably run a spacer on the backs with some slightly wider rear wheels. Probably..., or just taller rears for the heck of it. I dunno yet.
