My question, unrelated to a specific kart, is this.... how do you find so much time to do this?

With a full time job, kids, a house, and a woman that requires lots of my attention... I barely get time to do my do.

That Bonneville kart looks freakin' sweet, by the way.

Thanks, yea, Bonneville is pretty neat.

To answer your question: Whenever I can.

Nope- not working for me. Too far off-center. I'd cut the front bar and lose the up "V" in it and place it closer to center. I do like the idea of it being off-centered, but not that much- looks like the thrust would make it go in circles.JMHO-

I don't know how to say it Kelly,
but I'm with Doug I think.

I might change my mind as soon as I get used to it, but at first glance it's counter intuitive (reads: odd)

Propelling the kart, sure;
propelling the driver, okay;
propelling all but the driver, you lost me there :surrender:

But your karts a convincing enough to proove that you're great at what what you're doing
so if your instincts say "it belongs there" then go for it... I'd bet it'll work out somehow (just not yet) ;)

I can't see it yet with the side mount dealie, but I'm sure you'll make us all believers if you continue.

LOL.

Oxy, I know.

Poboy, I know.

and Sid, I know.

Just wait...

I think what's tripping everyone up here is the thinking that if it looks like it's jet powered, the jet needs to be in the center. That would only be a major factor if he was going for the "Direct Thrust" look.

Many jet engines don't use direct thrust to generate motion; they are used to drive an output shaft, just like most other engines. That means having the engine offset isn't any different than many of the karts that frequent the forum. All Kelly needs is a neat suggestion of that actually being the case to make/ sell the look. And with all the cool things he's sorted thru so far for ideas, it wouldn't suprize me in the least if he has just the parts he needs to pull it off.

 :cheers2:

Yeah- the thrust issue was my 2 second knee-jerk reaction that I have since questioned. I need to see some sheet metal to envision the total concept.

Me being me- I would probably mock up a complete faux jet engine and that would necessitate the original location.

See.. and I wasn't actually thinking about jets..
but about WWI airplanes.. those engines
if one prop.. it's always in the center
or if you want to look at it the other way in front of but below the pilot.

Yes, I do like the idea of a turbine, but since it's the baronesse,
it'd be more convincing with a "matching position"
especially if she will end up having her tail fin.

You simply cannot crossbreed a Fokker and a Harrier ;)

:cheers2: 'Sid, I can see where you're coming from, but for me, it's not an issue. Coming from industry, all we care about is that it works as advertized, and we can maintain it. If it looks even half way cool, so much the better.

So for me at least, it doesn't need to look like Kelly drew it on a CAD system, and Boeing starts full scale production next week. As long as there isn't a soda straw to simulate a drive shaft claiming to be rated for 3,500 HP (the "Star Trek" effect), I personally think he'll come up with something really cool to pull it off.

Of course, we all have to remember, this is his baby; and if inspiration strikes, take a deep breath, sit down, strap in and hang on......

:cheers2:   Pat

Thanks for all that everyone, I love it when there's something to sort through and I appreciate your added comments.

Moving on:

All day long I threw around this idea in my head and it just didn't come out right.

Feet don't fit here, this doesn't work that way, put it on the right and one leg sticks up, bla bla bla... my dog should just walk by & piss on it, I'd feel better... probably.

So I'm taking a suggestion... and that is, remove the front bumper. This piece won't fit in any usable configuration anyway unless it's done... and it won't look right.

After that, we then have to spin the steering around to get it all behind your feet and out of the way of this demonic addition. This allows a place for the feet, right at the sides of the cowling, over the steering and should be ok.

Machinist said something about perception and he nailed it IMO. While some may not have been thinking that, he made a point. Sure enough, if you see something jet powered (which it isn't by the way), you perceive it to have some sort of centered flow to it.

And no matter what I do here, the rear tail fin will be centered so no matter where you put it (except in the center) it's gonna throw the whole thing off anyway. If you put it up front in the center, nothing works and it gets into a place where you can't even go throw a gutter without scraping that purdy front end up cause it's too far forward and the bumper ruins the look... and it's long enough anyway as it is.

So with it cut, a mock up on my mess of a floor (new carpet coming soon btw.)

Here's where it stands... pretty close to the original drawing (which I liked)

Keep in mind, the front cowl thingy will be lower, sitting in a u-shaped metal "cup" of sorts welded between the remaining bumper studs (which have the pedal attachments & holes mind you...) and the top of it, or the rest of it, will be made of... Yup, a metal garbage can... hopefully it will round out the look.

Hell yeah. That's it right there. Drivers side. Lines up with the steering hoop and everything. Perfect fit.

Thanks.

The 2 Beer mock up now...

Drop it a bit, find a sh it t y garbage can with some dents.... LOL

Picture a small little flat windshield on this, up on top, just like a small old ww2 plane now.

Please remember: This isn't some recreation of a plane. If it was, it'd look like a plane. I'm not trying to recreate a plane. I'm only giving small accents here & there, and a name that loosely goes along with the theme... to a go kart that will be USED... made of possibly stuff one might find just hanging around, forgotten, junk.

Cruise any yard sale... you'll find the stuff.

'Sid, I was referring to this: "I think what's tripping everyone up here is the thinking that if it looks like it's jet powered, the jet needs to be in the center. That would only be a major factor if he was going for the "Direct Thrust" look."

Machinist said that. That's Pat, right?

It's all good.

Oh my...

Wander around the living room and stare...

and where do I end up?

Beer 4.

I need some thinkers here, cause I've come up with something I'm not quite sure how to do.

Look at this pic.

Let's take a hard left shall we?

I wanted 2 motors... and this thing is offset in more ways that I can think... but what if... they were in-line?

One in the normal position on the right rear... and one just like it, right in front of it.? ... well, just look.

How might one connect this mess?

I was trying to "balance" out the thing and with it being a 2 seater and I'm on the left, something had to take up the right side... and if you plop an engine... oh.... Here... it would kind of balance things out (not really) but it would look KILLER.

Driver and some nice decoratory (not a word) items on the left, including the Rudder/tail fin... and a crazy industrial mess on the right... Yep

So, question of the day... How would you run 2 5HP's, INLINE, powering the rear live axle only?

zzzt, zzzzttt. Poof!

Have fun with that one.

Uhhh I like shortening quotes :D

You're right..
I thought you meant the previous "going round in circles" thing ;)
Nevermind!

Yes please in line engines!

I already love the idea...
I'd move em a bit inward though more onto the passenger seat so to say.

Anyways.. connecting.. hmmm
clutches.. dual sprocket clutches to be precise, and a chain (with guard please and a tensioner)

Or do you want to get nasty with this one?
then right angle gears and a turning shaft
http://maedler.de/product/1643/1619/273/2511/kegelradsaetze-aus-stahl-spiralverzahnt-uebersetzung-11
(a simple rubber band on said shaft could then 'power' your 6 barrel minigun :2guns:)
