Today was a nice day, warm enough for a T-shirt and sweats so... let's work on the sarge shall we?

First was to put a decent sprocket carrier on it. These cheap-shiz northern tools ones just don't cut it... they're not quite round and that results in chain problems. So, a better sprocket carrier and a 62 on the back. After looking, a 66 is going to be the biggest we can go back there without cutting the frame.

Next up, the carb. The carb is fine but with all the old linkage in rough shape, it was time to rig up a few things. Into a box of rusty parts I go and out I come with one Rusty spring. You see, the sarge here has a "clunky" sort of feel to it so I wanted to give it a bit of an older clunky look to it.

So, the choke is sprung wide open (cause it doesn't need a choke... it starts on the 2nd pull without it) and a return spring for the throttle. Both were made from that one rusty spring.

Next was the air cleaner. It had to kind of "flow with the rest of it" so mounting a tecumseh plate on the carb, then cleaning up the cover turned out nicely.

Throw it all together with some axle collars and let it run for a bit. While spinnin, I hit the clutch with sandpaper to clean it up too.

Next up, the front end, and find some brakes. After that, mount the spare tire, ammo box, pads & a seat and we'll be a rolling.

The motor is a work of art, although it's a bit dirty still... but that's the fun of it.

Next up... Brown Thunder is Rolling now...

Ah, finally. It runs and it was time for a test.

No seat, some spare tank wired on the back... I just had to try it.

5 pushes/pulls/kicks back to the driveway and 5 re-tighten & aligning of things (axle, brakes, engine, sprocket...) later...

And we drove down the street.

It's always fun to break in things and go through the trials of making these things.

Report: It runs, it's very quick... and a bit scary. Some lazy turns proved it's a whole different animal and might take some getting used to.

Some pics of it, sarge and Urban Defiance in my driveway after hours of driving UD. LOL

Thanks for looking.

And... continuing on....

A colder day today, it was sweats & a jacket for this day.

After fixing my real car, I decided to spend the rest of the day on ole Sarge here.

Seen here... It's old schoolin time...

Dig these rear mounted Scrub brakes!

Sarge is so **** old school that I just had to do this and make it look as clunky as possible... and this was the ticket. And they work... well. Yea, I know it looks like the clearance sucks, but it's really ok.

Spare tire mount is done, and the front end is cut out and mounting tubes are underneath it. Now to mount it & do up the grill just right. Working lights & all.

A few more misc trim pieces here & there (all military) and this beast will roll.

Thanks for lookin... LOL

Got a moment to visit my kids friend & fellow racer. She's 14 and racing again this year so they had a bit of a teenager play date I guess.

While over there, her friends dad (who I've raced with) was in his shop (which is bigger than my whole property) was doin this & that so we just goofed off for a bit.

I was also on the search for ideas because I'd hit a dead end.

One of my kart rods (Bonneville Spirit) has an engine that had to be something to look at and make the ride come together. I'd been struggling on the exhaust / carb issue.

It's not that it doesn't run, it's great... but the hot pipe is 1/4 in from the air filter. Too close.

So anyway, he gave me some ideas and we used his lathe to fab up the filter cup, couple that to an elbow from a car exhaust... and then weld up that pipe...

and she's a looker.

A nicely rebuilt Tecumseh H50... with a few mods.

Thanks for looking, and as usual... the whole story at www.kartrods.com

Now it's party time... GoPro in hand... now just one more small item to get & I'll film my little commercial.

Perhaps a test run from the cockpit of Urban Defiance for y'all this week.

A little mock up of all the parts... It's looking mean now.

Even though very few folks reply to this and the general focus on this forum isn't hot rod stuff, I'm going to keep going.

A recap:
The front hood is a chopped scott-attwater outboard motor hood
The frame is a manco
Fuel tank from a Yamaha RC100
Motor is a tecumseh H50, governer gone, shaved head, custom exhaust, intake is custom made from a car exhaust bend, then all prettied up.
Wheels are spare stuff from minibikes & kart parts.
Butterfly steering wheel is vintage, was bent & thrown out.. I rescued it.
Not many nuts match, etc.

Have a good one.!

Thanks. After many name changes & such... (it's an artistic thing) it's name is the Bonneville Spirit. Seeing I'm in Utah and the Bonneville Salt Flats are a stomping ground of mine, it seemed to fit and I've always had a thing for the actual "old school" method of doing things.

Why pay for a kart like this? My friend, make one. I'm into this one under 200 bucks at the moment.

It's like my dad used to tell me... you don't buy a hot rod, it doesn't come in a kit.

You make it with what ya got.

Drop by sometime. www.kartrods.com

Oh, no worries here. I keep doing it because it's fun and it's a good release for me... and I have a knack for turning usless stuff into something usable.

Anyone wanna throw out ideas for the next four Kart Rods? I have one solid plan for the next one but haven't come up with the other ones yet. In total, I will build 8 of them.

The next one will have a Police theme. (gotta have a chase kart, right?) It'll have a front end incorporating a police motorcycle's front fairing from the 70's most likely.

Anyone?

As a funky (and stupid) incentive... I'll give credit to the winning idea by stenciling it on the ride... which will show up at Speed Week in the fall here at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Onward.

Do a HillBilly kart. You could just bolt random boards to the frame, and maybe have a fake chicken strapped to the hood.

Maybe something reminiscent of the drop tank speedsters that used to run on the salt flats in years past. Kinda pointed on the front and rear with the wing like fins on the rear?
