Kelly- nothing but the best of luck to you amigo, I know you'll do well. By the same token, watch out for that little girl of yours, she'll probably smoke you. There's no prouder moment for a parent than when your little one hands you your @ss in something you've taught them to do!

(I've got $5 riding on the kid... LOL)

Good luck Kelly! We'll be here when you get back.

Thanks. I still look in & read things here but just not building stuff for now.

If you like, here's a goofy update on the kart racing.

I got my kart back last night from the guy I sold it to... and I knew what condition it was in prior as I'd seen a picture.

They moved into a place that had no storage so my baby has been sitting outside for a year.

Yes, a whole year.

Here's the one pic I got before I got it back to show you what I was up against.

Nice huh?

sigh...

I spent all evening on it.

I'll shoot a pic when I'm done but we're close... and I'm a master at using what I have to make something work.

I've raced different classes in the past including: Sportsman (KT100), Super Sportsman (F200) and Sr. 4 Stroke. This one is for Sr.4 class as it's the most competitive. There's always more than 10 in the class and the last races of the year usually draw about 20 of us so it's just a good time.

The motor is a sealed Honda GX200. No tinkering, just pull it & go. There's only 4 things you can do to it. Plug, Oil, Air filter & clutch. The rest is untouchable. If something goes wrong with the motor, the techs must watch you break the seal to fix, then they reseal it. Keeps it fair.

Thanks Rusty, I call it fun.

Ok, not kartrods still, but a little update on the racing scene.

Why I continue on is because in the end, it's about building and karting... right?

So today has me cleaning out my shed. It's got 4 years of karting stuff in it from the days I first started racing and I'm on a mission. Reconstruct my daughter's first kart. See pic 1. Most of it is just sitting in the shed... unused and forgotten. It's not tons of stuff, but there's parts from multiple karts in there.

(back story time)

When we got into it only 4 years ago, I remember going to the races & just watching. Gathering as much info as I could by talking to racers and hoping to go in with an informed approach.

While I did have a lot of info, it still wasn't enough. The day we started was a disaster. This broke, that broke, what's this do, what's that do? Ohhhhhhhhhhh... crash, bent axle, black flagged... Ugh.

Needless to say, it took time to learn the ropes & get where we are today.

I remember my many visits to the races with my daughter. Even getting someone to let you "sit your kid" in a real racer was a task. You had to be friendly with them.

Oddly enough, the one person that did let me sit my daughter in their kids racer ended up being a the guy that I'd race against for the next 3 years. We became friends and the battle was on the track... and a year later, my daughter spanked the very kid that drove this kart she'd sat in.

Now in the thick of it as we've been for a few years, I now have many friends there. Some of them have kids that want to try it, some other people's kids want to try it but there's one problem. They can't try it without actually owning one... and sinking thousands into something doesn't make sense to most normal working class parents... because it could be a failure. Not to mention, no racer or parent of a racer would EVER let some kid just "try out" their kart. It doesn't happen... and for good reason.

And in the kart racing world, you'll never sell something for what you paid... Plain & simple. So parts end up sitting, unused.

Their only option is to get the parents to fork out enough to use the rentals (which are pretty fast) but it's still not the same.

So the mission today was to find all the stuff to put a JR1 Cadet class racer together. Why? To let this 7 year old girl at the track try it, no strings attached.

It furthered an idea that I'm going to try.

That is: Get a hold of all the racers and solicit their older used parts, cadet parts for kids, etc... and they donate them to me to build "scrounge racers."

The plan: Have a few "scrounge racers" available for future racers to actually TRY and see what it's like & see if they got it, or not.

Then: If the kid is good and has it, the parent can buy it (or one off them) for pretty cheap and the profit is spread back to the ones that donated the parts. Problem solved, parts gone & used by someone instead of collecting dust or showing up on ebay for less than a profit.

Who builds them: Me.

Another aspect of this revolves around the fear that all kids experience on their first year in this class. I know for a fact that the rookies have a certain fear when the front pack comes around to lap them. It's a scary thing to watch as a parent and you can only hope that your kid comes out ok when 5 of them hit that corner and your kid is in it.

So it could spawn a new class. Here, there's kid karts (comer motors, do about 20-25) and from there, it's to JR1 where the speed doubles and they're faced with some crazy stuff. I watch one of them every race and she's still in the back... and it's been a year... scared and getting lapped every time.

Perhaps these "scrounged karts" could run in a class called JR1 Rookie. Let the kids that are new run the rookie class for a year, mandatory unless otherwise directed by the track officials. If they got it, they can go to the real JR1 class. If they don't, they can sit comfortably in rookie & learn without being too intimidated by the speeders.

We'll see where it goes.

That's the story for today. The kart is rebuilt and ready. I used parts from at least 4 different karts including a Track Magic, CRG, Birel, and an old yamaha RC100. See pic 2. My daughters first kart, reworked and going to the track pretty soon to see if a little girl I don't even know has what it takes. Why? Because she has that certain look in her eyes.

All done kartrods style... with what I had at the time.

Fun.

A last update, then I'll shut up about the racing scene... that is unless you want to keep hearing this stuff.

I only post because I'm really happy with how it all turned out.

Today started once again deciding what to tackle first.

Quite a bit still has to be done so I dove in.

1st. Switch tires. I bought my daughter new tires so I'll be using her old ones since we run the same ones. Her's were at 3/4 used so it'll work.

Then it was onto taking the spare wheels that were new last year but now not used and putting them on the cadet.

Then tear my daughters kart apart, clean every single thing and reassemble. As I mentioned, she's only 100 pts behind the leader now for the championship and by our rules, we get to drop our worst 2 times. This means she's got a very good shot at it.... So I wanted it perfect. Her kart is a 2009 birel with the 28MM frame... a flexible beast... and one of the front runners since it's purchase. How I know this? I have the book that's been kept on it since it was new. Every single thing that's ever happened to it from oil changes to a broken clip is in the book. EVery gear, every ratio, every race result is there and we're now the 3rd owner of it. If you were to look at this book (now 2 inches thick) you'd be amazed at the info in it. With the exceptions of a breakdown, the kart literally has never done worse than 3rd in its life and is known as one of the karts to beat here.

I didn't take a pic of it but she looks almost new now and is ready to shoot it out for the championship in the last 3 races of the year.

Then it was onto my ride. Mounted her old tires on mine, and double checked every single thing... down to the thread condition on every nut.

After it was all done, it was onto safety. In racing, every nut (well, almost every one) must be double nut, safety wired, cotter pinned... safety. You don't want something coming off.

So, a peek at my kart for anyone that cares. You'll notice marks, writing, etc. everywhere. It's all about safety and my ride is a precision machine... on the opposite end of the kartrod.

It's not a new kart, but pretty new. I keep it with the older body parts to give it a slightly older look to it... plus the body parts are cheaper that way... and Kart racing isn't exactly cheap.

Anyway, enjoy. I'm outta here for a bit.

Kelly

Ok, here's once in a while. A look at the Honda GX200 that is the stock 4 cycle engine used at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.

The engine itself must be sealed or worked on by the engine builder only. This keeps it pretty fair.

So it's off to the engine builder tomorrow to have him remove the restrictor from this one. My daughter has a spare engine so I have this one I'll use for me. 3 classes use this engine and my class uses no restrictor plate, so I have to have it taken out by the "officials" or I can't use it, period.

The little arrows point to some of the seals they use. In front and in back are a cable type seal with serial numbers.

In the front, the seal goes from the fan shroud to the other side where it goes through the side cover. This stops you from tinkering there.

In back, another seal goes through 3 of the valve cover bolts then through the carb mount bolts.

If the seals get broken in a race (e.g. is spotted broken at the weigh station after a race, you can get it fixed but that's really rare.) If it's broken anywhere else than the track, the engine is banned from the track forever... No exceptions.

Also seen here: My custom throttle linkage thingy.

The motors are basically stock except for 18lb springs, valve lash set, they drill a pulse line npt fitting for you & I think a slight timing advance, but that's it. These engines are bullet proof.

The only thing we can mess with is the spark plug (no indexing allowed) and it must be a certain kind. The Air filter (must be the actual honda gx200 filter), fuel pump and oil change is all you can do. (required oil is Royal Purple 5w30 or XPR) The required clutch is the Noram GE, (# of teeth is your choice) but that's it, PERIOD.

How's that for rules...Fun huh?

Anyway, here's my race engine.

So if you slip and crack a seal, you can't just have it re-sealed (after checking it meets to the rules for a fee of course) by the engine builder?
Take this very engine for example and your not careful on the way TO the engine builder tomorrow,
if you accidentally crack the seal you can put it on urban defiance but not on your race kart again?

Oh, Do you mind asking the engine builder what is actually done to the engine?
(roughly would do.. if billet con rod, what timing key if any such things)
Thanks.

Well, if you slip the seal generally won't break. They're pretty tough and I have yet to see one just break due to vibrations. Now, getting in a wreck or crashing can cause it and it's just redone, no charge because it happened on track and they're all checked prior to racing so it's ok there.

But yes, if a seal is broken away from the track, you're done with that engine. To keep it fair, they have no way of knowing what you did so it's just done. Done & done.

I can find out for sure but I know most of the story.

With the honda GX200, only heavier valve springs, valve lash set and a slight advance in timing is all that's really done. The jet on the stock GX200 does quite well but I don't know exactly what it is but we're hitting 50-60 mph typically and these engines last about 4 seasons without issue. Clone's don't last that long typically from what I hear.
