Neat, mine's a 3/4 so I'm betting it's a 5. Governer is out, etc. Should be fun. This thing starts 1st pull every time and is pretty strong. Very little use, sat in a shed forever. Inside is clean as a whistle.

Good luck on your welding!

Post a pic of your kart from the side and I'll play with that if you want.

Kelly

Its gonna be 2 years worth in 9 months. Im hoping its not too fast paced, otherwise I think Im in trouble. I think I can do the basics alright, but the intricate parts might be an issue for me. Who knows, maybe Ill be able to pick the stuff up easy enough...

Heres a better picture for ya.

The axle will be moved back, and the seat back to about where those 2 brackets are at the base of the roll bar. Roll bar will be gone.
Now, I was thinking... the frame is made up up something like 3/4in tube... I would like to reinforce the frame in such a way that doesnt add too much extra weight and looks decent.
I think after a while my 200 someodd leadbutt and rough terrain will pretty near destroy this thing if i dont reinforce it. :roflol:

I was wondering what happened to the big B-Thunder.

You have 4 total correct? Or is it 3 complete ones?

I almost forgot how many.
1. Urban Defiance - Functional
2. The Sarge - Functional (trailer in progress)
3. Bonneville Spirit - All parts collected, just not assembled, might rework the rear end.
4. Baroness - The 2 seater, Front half is there
5. Brown Thunder - Needs brakes, to be renamed
6. That black & yellow one (no name)
7. Military Minibike, all parts collected, not finished

So, 6 and a minibike.

Update:

Ah, morning.

So, I head to the hardware store for some primer gray paint and return. I stripped off most of the parts and hit a few areas with the primer to see what would happen.

I kind of knew it but tried anyway. The primer, wherever I put it, just gave me the finger and did that "cracking effect" everywhere. Now, while it was neat (and the name "crackin up" did cross my mind), I knew it wouldn't there for long. This old thing has had so many engines on it and so much oil/wd40 in places that nothing would stick.

So, I pulled out the stripper and coated the thing.

30 minutes later, you have Picture 1 below.

Evidently, this old beast had been painted 4 or 5 times in its life and one treatment wasn't gonna do it.

In Pic 2, we see the alien creature drooling acid (or melting, I'm still not sure) and yet another idea crosses my mind... (no no no, that's too artistic...) so I let it finish bathing.

Ok, so I'm out of stripper. As I stripped it, see Pic 3, it started coming to me and a color scheme that would work.. and it's basic.

Back to the hardware store for more stripper.

I got the paint, a wire brush to finish things up and some stripper. Sitting on the shelf is my favorite brand and there's 3 kinds. Good, better, and best. I've never bought the best and since this f&*$R# was taking so long, I got it.

Came with a nifty sprayer too.

Now. See Pic 4. The reason I posted this is because I want to warn anyone that is going to go this route to be careful with this goo... should you dare to buy it.

Normally, I can slather on my normal stripper and be good to go. Every now & then the stuff might hit my hand, or arm, but it doesn't burn much and you have time to wash it off before it starts burning.

But this stuff... the Best stuff they had... is evil.

Just spraying it on (just microscopic tidbits in the air hit my shin and finger) and BURNED instantly. I was trying to figure out if I just got bit by a spider or something... I mean, it was BURNING.

I went for the hose pretty quick. It took me 2 good flushings to get the burning to go away. Really.

This stuff should be kept VERY FAR AWAY from human flesh, kids.... some adults, period.

I'm surprised it didn't burn a hole in my driveway and my shoes.

Danger

Poison...

It'll kill anything it comes in contact with.

Ok, so I finished with that & washed it all off and let it dry. Down to the bare metal.

Did some welding while it was naked...

On with the white, on with the primer... put it back together,... let dry.

Anyway, she's a new beast now, lighter and more basic. Still sporting a look that seems different yet right in line with something I'd do.

Dunno what to name it yet... More soon.

Kelly

p.s. The last pic is for you itsid... that back piece is deceiving because it's cut the way it is... but I assure ya, it's where it needs to be.

as if...

Drove sarge this evening and when putting her away, I remembered my camera was on the bench. I grabbed it and out of the corner of my eye was an old boat motor emblem from my days in the classic boating arena.

It fits.

grey white red... I think I like it :D
extremely cool emblem, very sixties.

And I know that it looks great from behind, that's why I can't really tell whats itching my eyes viewing from the side like this:

maybe just the cutout for the wheel *shrugs*
Anyways, I wouldn't be ashamed having this parked at my front door :D

I'm eager to see what it'll look like when you're done with it.

Moving along...

Update, part 1 of 2.

I ran into a neighbor that had a few briggs intek engines and he was getting rid of them. I came along when he only had one left (just the block, with compression) and it was just enough to piece together a running 6.5 intek with my parts from the blown one and his.

So, on with the intek, a blackout treatment and an exhaust system to get it going.

See pic.

And I'm not happy with it. It just looks like the others... and we can't have that now. Don't get me wrong, I mean, it's ok... but something didn't look right to me. I needed to be different.

I wanted something else.

Read on in Update 2 of 2.

So, we land on update 2 of 2.

Hating that exhaust, I thought to myself...

"Self? What are you going to do here?"

Um...

This!

It's totally stupid but something about it works for me. It's almost steam punked, yet artistic... go figure.

There's only so much you can do with a briggs intek. The exhaust is a 3/4 screw in deal POINTING STRAIGHT UP... so up it went, then down... then out the back. It's not wrapped yet and a brace will go on tomorrow... and it's 1/8 in from the axle... and the motor... Whew! Close one.

I always wanted to run the exhaust out the back and we've now stepped into a weird area with this one.

I ran it a while to burn off the coatings on the plumbing and while it ran, I hit the axle with sand paper and hit the clutch too... Nice shiny thing now eh?

Oh yes, WAY back I was wondering what to do with the pull starter... this one tucks nicely under the shroud. (last pic, from inside)

stupid? maybe...
But cool looking, and as long as it works why not ;)

Okay this shorter pipe looks more reasonable, but more usual too;
and as far I can tell that's not necessarily your intention ;)

Update:

Ok, so this morning comes like any other day and I'm cruising the classifieds with my morning coffee.

Something catches my eye. It's a kart that I've seen somewhere before.

Could it be? No! Really?

It's the same kart that had the car trunk attached to the front end... and now the trunk lid is missing.

And... for sale again?

Really?

Someone bought it and is trying to "flip" it for a profit? What's this world come to?

It's post #14 here: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=22928

I have no idea why I even looked at it, but I kept flipping back to it and just staring. With the car trunk gone you could now see the steering hoop slammed way down & wondered. Could someone have tried to build something like mine? No way. Couldn't be.

I looked closer & saw nothing but parts I could use, and sarge needs some better tread...so I called the kid. I always allot myself 100 bucks a paycheck to do something with the karts, so I could throw 50 at him and have an adventure to boot!

I showed up in one of the scarier parts of town where this teenager greets me. There were witnesses on the doorstep and he just leaves them there to attend to me. Hey, I'm the one with the money.

He takes me in the back yard where it appears people live in 5 tents. Yes, tents everywhere. ... and behind the garbage can, is this kart. He tells me how to operate it (with a shoestring device... really) and that it runs, bla bla bla... see pics, it's funny.

1 hr later, sitting in my carport... scared and alone... (possibly relieved)

... is this sad sack of crap.

As I looked it over, I made a mental picture of what was usable and what was not. A lot wasn't usable... but being me, what exactly could I do here?

So, we'll first list in this post my "What's wrong with this picture" and show you exactly what this fine prize was made of, then we'll post a 2nd post showing what I did.

First. See the pics below. It's what I found as I tore it down.

Congratulations Kelly! You really CAN do something with a horrible, horrible POS! Honestly, I wouldn't have given it a second glance. Kudos to you. That takes vision.

What did you say he paid you to haul it away?

RESPECT!

I would have taken any bet that this thing cannot be resurrected.
And now... it looks like it's a good base for a project.
I'm impressed :D

Thanks. He did help me lift the beast onto the trailer. It was worth the 50 bucks, both in comedic value and parts.

COOL!

With most of my rides taking shape, this WAS going to be just a test bed for engines but now... what will I have to do to make this look like a cop?

I'll have to think about this... It's wide and there's lots of room up there for the feet to go inside of something so I'm thinking a blocky front clip from some kids kiddy car... done up as a cop.

I dunno, I never do until it happens.

more soon.

Man that kart was death waiting to happen glad you got it before anyone else died. At least you will give it some much needed improvements. I look forward to seeing the cop as I do with all your projects.
