Well, not exactly 6000. Highest I've seen my daughter hit was 5490 but hers is restricted. I could have been mistaken somewhere in my typing... or you're thinking of my other GX which is modified.

I was assuming something like this:
11" rear wheels
20T clutch sprocket (didn't count but looks huge)
72T axle

And to hit something like 55-60mph that'd be 6000-6500 rpm

'sid

Again, all values are guesses

Not here. Typical gears run on this track are:

Jr1 Classes. 8 - 12 yr old, honda gx200, restricted..18 or 19T up front and 52 to 55 in the back.

Jr2. 13 -15 yr old, honda GX200, less restricted 17 or 18 up front and 53 to 58 in the back.

Sr4. (my class) 16 yrs & up, honda GX200 not restricted, 16 to 18 up front, 53 to 57 in the back

Usually.

You gotta consider our track here. It's 1 mile around with about 15 configurations we run. Some days there's a full straight, some days not.

Just back from the Motor sealer and the new seals are on, run in and tested at his place (also known as Goose's Kart Shop).

All is well.

See pic of the new seals. These suckers don't come off. If one gets broke... you either got hit really hard (and are injured) or you cut them yourself.

The reason you don't see gas lines on it is because we bench tested it using a gravity feed tank he has just for it.

Ah, the smell of fresh gas.

Time to assemble all that, then it's to the track for 5 straight hours of practice.

Oh yes, While there we talked a bit. I've known him for years so I asked to find out for sure, what they do to the honda from the box to the track to prep them.

I got the whole story from why they don't use the briggs or clones and the whole deal. But someone wanted to know, so here it is:
1. Governer removed.
2. Pulse line drilled in the intake manifold
2. Nuts drilled for sealing cables
3. Break in running

That's it.

The honda GX200 valve springs are beefy enough to "not float" so that's all there is to it.

The Honda may cost more... but then again, you do get what you pay for.

Thanks Kelly..
that's exactly what I wanted to hear right now :D

basically doing nothing (as in 'nothing expensive') to an engine can result in serious fun!

'sid

PS ask your daughter to record a lap or two ;)

An update: No worries, the kartrods will continue but the racing thing is on.

Yesterday I skated from work and picked up my daughter at High school... with both our race machines on the trailer.

I think her friends are a bit jealous now.

Anyway, we headed for the track for a 5 hour test & tune session. Yup. 33 bucks and a 1/2 hour drive... and we had the track to ourselves.

Not a soul was there.

Off with the karts & fired them up. We drove for a bit and I tuned mine here & there and I'd say I've done well.

Why?
1. My kart runs well and is just like it used to be. So good there.
2. I cannot catch my daughter now... She's got me beat... not by much (only 1 second) which makes me equal with most of the pack.

and...

While out there, about 2 hours after we'd arrived, a truck shows up with a Junior 1 Kart in it. This little kid hops out and to my surprise, it's the 7 yr old kid and his parents we sold my daughters Jr1 kart to. They were there to practice for the first time on the track.

This kid has been holding a 2nd place in the kid karts class for 2 years but today... is his first try in the Jr1 class... in a machine that's held it's own with the front runners before.

and it's twice as fast, so he's got his work cut out for him.

Seems I've made some friends because I helped them tune it (cause they're newbies) and showed them what to do.

The kid was running lines similar to his kid kart class and my daughter steps in... she's a caring kid and the lines of a 25mph weed-eater powered kart is quite different from his new class.

Minutes later they're both back out there... and my daughter has told him to follow her for 2 laps. She goes slower while he runs it around and within a few laps, this little kid is getting it. It was neat to see him drive it because he's so little... and my daughter was very very happy to see it again and mostly to see it driven by someone that knew what he was doing.

Numerous times they ran and every now & then my daughter would tail him, chase him, push him a bit and he really starting coming alive. And the only way you get "into it" is when you're battling with others.

By the end of the day, the sun going down, this kid had some lines down and was doing rather well... and he wasn't afraid to go full throttle into the 1st turn. How he'll handle 10 others around him in a real race is yet to be seen, but he doesn't appear to have much fear.

So, a few pics.

Little 7yr old kid with his new ride... and his new idol, my daughter.... now the kid wants a black suit.

We helped some people today and their 1st experience wasn't a disaster like ours. This kid really has that look in his eye.

More soon.

Continuing on...

With all the race stuff in full swing, I took some time to sort a bunch of stuff I have and my Sunday turned to Sarge.

Sarge needed a little love. I've been driving her all the time and it was time to pull some things apart & do some maintenance.

First up, an oil change.
Second, tightening a bunch of loose things
Third, pull the clutch & see how things are... fine. Running on the hot side, but fine. Heavier springs have it engaging around 4000 with a nice smooth launch. I imagine it glows in the dark when it's hot. LOL
Fourth, clean it up a bit
Fifth, a replacement gas cap with a vent... I found it in my stuff when I was sorting.
Sixth, a new spark plug, fuel & air filter.
Still starts 1st pull.

Oh, I fabbed up another nifty antenna from a wire clothes hanger too.

... and some other rear tires also. The old ones were showin threads.

All is well here.

Something's tugging at my brain lately... I think I want to make another Military themed kart. They seem to get the looks and the attention.

... and I love attention.

A few pics.

Kelly,
When you get ready to build that other military kart let me know I have a small two cylinder military engine that would be real cool on a kart it is a Continental 2A016 and it is OD Green.
I can machine the crank to accept a 3/4 clutch they are only rated at 3hp but I know they would be about 8 and it would have a lot of torque being a two cylinder four stroke you would have a power stroke every 360 degrees the engine is built like a brick sh-t house.
