An update: No worries, the kartrods will continue but the racing thing is on.
Yesterday I skated from work and picked up my daughter at High school... with both our race machines on the trailer.
I think her friends are a bit jealous now.
Anyway, we headed for the track for a 5 hour test & tune session. Yup. 33 bucks and a 1/2 hour drive... and we had the track to ourselves.
Not a soul was there.
Off with the karts & fired them up. We drove for a bit and I tuned mine here & there and I'd say I've done well.
Why?
1. My kart runs well and is just like it used to be. So good there.
2. I cannot catch my daughter now... She's got me beat... not by much (only 1 second) which makes me equal with most of the pack.
and...
While out there, about 2 hours after we'd arrived, a truck shows up with a Junior 1 Kart in it. This little kid hops out and to my surprise, it's the 7 yr old kid and his parents we sold my daughters Jr1 kart to. They were there to practice for the first time on the track.
This kid has been holding a 2nd place in the kid karts class for 2 years but today... is his first try in the Jr1 class... in a machine that's held it's own with the front runners before.
and it's twice as fast, so he's got his work cut out for him.
Seems I've made some friends because I helped them tune it (cause they're newbies) and showed them what to do.
The kid was running lines similar to his kid kart class and my daughter steps in... she's a caring kid and the lines of a 25mph weed-eater powered kart is quite different from his new class.
Minutes later they're both back out there... and my daughter has told him to follow her for 2 laps. She goes slower while he runs it around and within a few laps, this little kid is getting it. It was neat to see him drive it because he's so little... and my daughter was very very happy to see it again and mostly to see it driven by someone that knew what he was doing.
Numerous times they ran and every now & then my daughter would tail him, chase him, push him a bit and he really starting coming alive. And the only way you get "into it" is when you're battling with others.
By the end of the day, the sun going down, this kid had some lines down and was doing rather well... and he wasn't afraid to go full throttle into the 1st turn. How he'll handle 10 others around him in a real race is yet to be seen, but he doesn't appear to have much fear.
So, a few pics.
Little 7yr old kid with his new ride... and his new idol, my daughter.... now the kid wants a black suit.
We helped some people today and their 1st experience wasn't a disaster like ours. This kid really has that look in his eye.
More soon.
