I don't know how many free B&S & other motors I've picked up for free when the owner had thrown them out simply because of they were "hard to start".

90% of them just needed a good carb cleaning and a new plug, and they ran like new.

I'm partial to briggs myself because, well they're really, cool, reliable and have a nice sound, and are really fun to modify. Clones I can also see the advantage to as well as they're so cheap. I probably wouldn't put one on a kart though. I'd mainly want one to be a guinea pig for mods.

I'll tell you whats wrong with the **** world, people get too lazy to fix their crap and they just throw it out and buy a new one. As a result manufacturers make their products cheap because they know people won't bother keep them running longer than a few years. Take boat motors for example, look at all the old Johnson's you see around those new mercurys they make now won't last 10 years. And cars, you see old trucks towing those ugly, new tree-hugger, eco-freindly cars when the break down a year after they by them. I don't know why people buy those forieghn cars. They are so **** ugly. I see them in the snowbank every winter and who do the tree-huggers count on? Me in my old truck to come out and save their butts. It seems like these are the same people that try to tell me what I can and can't do. The same people who rely on me to drag their behindes out of the dich try to tell me that I can't drive my truck because it's "harmfull to the enviornment" I tell ya, its not about the enviornment it's about controlling my life. Freedom. Thats what thats about. I want to make my dollar fairly for my work. They take my money away and give to people who want free money. Let me tell you folks, money don't grow on trees! All those people who drive their prius and tell us to re-use and recycle, how long do you think they keep their prius? 3 years or whenever it blows up due to lack of washing it cuz they want to "save water". These people really piss my off. I want a good long lasting product weather it be a go kart engine, or a car, or a computer. That should be the standard. You know there are laws regulating what you can do with your go kart on your own land? Thats right. I should be able to do whatever the hell I want to do on my own land as long as it isn' t un-ethical or immoral. Riding a go kart around is neither. Don't try and say its causing global warming and thats hurting the planet. That is still highly debateable and no laws should be made over it ex. Cap and trade. I'm not going to get pollitical here but this is rediculous. There going to make laws regulating gas milage in cars. When the hell did it become the governments place to do that? Global warming is a very shakey theory and they want to regulate what kind of car I can buy because of it? I don't belive this crap. This whole country is going down the tube and I can't do anything about it. Same reason why all people in my generation (teens) are screwed up (more so than gernerations before). Because they are brought up thinking that they are entitled to free crap. (health care, ect) I tell you, this country was a lot better off when you had to work for a living. Those clone motors might be allright. I don't know too much about them. But what I do know for sure is that I'm going to run my Tecumseh untill I die or it becomes so worn out that it blows up.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. I have 7 clones on various equipment. Stock to mildly modded. Next one i'm building should be in the 12hp range. They run excellent. I have had to do zero repairs or adjustments on them. I think people are unwilling to embrace the fact that the chinese really have created something too good to be true here. The features you get for $99 in the clone motor run at or better than an I/C Briggs that costs $319+ or a Honda at $399+.

I'm all for screwing around trying to fix rusted up old Briggs motors on the cheap. But when the parts start adding up cost wise along with the hours of labor and just hoping it runs when you're all done. The clone new in the box starts to become a really good looking option.

Our problems are only just beginning.
Still almost three years to go.
It may already be too late to fix the damage that has been done.

Side note:
If the global warming tree hugger types get their way, our hobby will magically disappear.

The chances of anything major being wrong with an old briggs, honda, wisconsin, etc are slim. Most of the time you can take an old non running engine, and fix it for under $50. New rings cost less than $20 on most, likely will never need to replace the piston, con rod is another $30 tops, carbs can be rebuilt for under $20 most of the time, These things are so simple there is no reason to not fix them.

agreeing with what russ said the clones are 100% rip off of honda engines that they took the time to build and make em reliable as they are and then some slanty eye gook decided ohh me want money me steal design me eat cat then me build engine ohh me sell for 50 dowra to horible freight then me make money because clone onwry cost 4 dowra in child laboor.

After working in a small engine shop, and having to fix people severely neglected, destroyed pieces of trash. I prefer to not even waste my time opening up somebody's random junk engine. (unless of course its rare, or i have a special vested interest). If your gonna do it right, your gonna have to replace most parts to keep from constantly breaking down and having to tear it apart again. I'll gladly pay the 71 dollars again (90 with 2 year warrenty) for piece of mind in knowing that i took good care of it from day one. And if it breaks, do NOT walk into the shop, do NOT pick up a wrench, go to HF set it on the counter and DO collect your brand new engine.

I've got 3 briggs and and 2 lawn boys that i got for free and cleaned the carb and got running. But i don't feel it even worth the time to build something, because if i do it cheap i'll constantly have to fix it, and if i do it right it'll cost money, and be worth putting a nice engine on it (or if i run across a unique engine, spend the money to fully rebuilt it)

Plus i consider my time valuable, and having to deal with greasy, rusted engines with stale gas and stripped bolts, is not my idea of a good time.

Remember when I was talking about whats wrong with the world?

Besides, whats the fun in running you new chinise motor for a month untill it breaks then sending it in for a new one? Maintaining and repairing stuff if part of the hobby
