I have an American sportworks go kart that had a Subaru 6.5 hp on it and I’m changing it out with a predator 212 with a tav already on it. The current set up has a jackshaft on it. Can I use that with the new engine and tav set up?

The go kart police are gunna confiscate your China engine and write you a ticket for non-American made modifications.

LOL... it had a Subaru engine on it, the Go-Kart police may let him slide.

I have a neighbor that was working in a Chinese kart for a friend. It had a jackshaft CVT setup that was bypassed so it was running on a centrifugal clutch.

I scratched my head and looked twice to figure out why they did that, but anyhow - it shows you can have driveline components hanging out doing nothing if everything else lines up.

See if the drive clutch on the subaru will fit on the predator shaft and use the original JS setup. The TAV is easy to remove ... just 4 bolts.

Ok great I think that is what I’ll try to do. I’ll keep you posted. It’s an American Sportswork Hornet BTW. Just needed some upgrades since it’s being passed down from older brother to little brother. I bought the predator and put exhaust, new air intake, new TAV, and changed the springs out to 18lb springs. That was all in a “stage 1 kit” from OMB. I was trying to just swap it out but I’m a newbie to karts or honestly engine’s / Karts so of course I’m running into “scratch my head moments. Thank you for your response and ANY future help with this project

Nope, just a plain Honda GCV160 self propelled. I wish I had a riding mower to hop up. Maybe even add a road gear somehow to cruise around at 30 MPH! :auto: :roflol:

Hmmmm, a kart-towable mower trailer..........Or a vert shaft/mower setup to bolt to the kart........hmmmmmm.......:cornut:

One of my customers has a rear engined Cub Cadet riding mower she lets me use for her yard(it's big), and every once in a while when I'm bored, I'll start on the driveway, put the engine at full throttle, reverse it a bit, then hit the gas HARD! It'll consistently pop wheelies!

Hehe, my kart's louder than the mower!!
At any rate I'd kill my clutch real fast with the current gearing.
But if I could, you know I would!!!

Hornet engine swapping help!!

I have a American sportworks hornet that I am doing some upgrades on. I bought a predator 212 and a tc for it. The hornet had a Jackshaft set up on it. How in the world do I make this match up!! The new tc won’t match up with the jackshaft so I’m wondering do I have to have a certain tc to make it match up? Please any help would be awesome!!! Newbie here by the way

by hornet you mean 3170, right?
ah too bad, that's a chinese made manual
far from the quality of previous Manco manuals :(
Still pretty straight forward actually.

Anyways when you say you bought a TC I assume you bought a TaVKit replica, correct?
well first stepp: take both pulleys off the backplate the Tavkit came with

mount the sprocket and the driven pulley to the jackshaft,
and the driver pulley to the engine..
those should line up, if they don't we need pictures.

maybe you installed the jackshaft incorrectly (either the plate or the actual shaft)

keep in mind that the Manco 5959 belt (as used on your kart originally)
is a hair longer than the 203589A belt the original TaV2 Kit came with,
so you might have a problem with the belt being a bit tight;

you might be able to adjust that by moving the jackshaft plate a bit
(if it's slotted that is) else you might need a new belt.

And don't ask the same question twice in different threads.
reuse the old thread instead.

Sorry for posting twice. I’m learning! Lol Yes it is a 3170 I’m assuming. I google that image and it looks exactly like what I have. I’m going to include a pic of the tc I bought.

Yepp, as I said...
remove that stupid backplate from your TAV..

and mount the Pulley to the jackshaft (you hopefully still have) on your JS-plate instead

Ok so I took the pulleys off that back plate. Does this plate I’ve circled come off of the jack shaft and then I’ll be able to slide the new one on? Maybe it’s just tight on there but it doesn’t seem to be able to come off.

it does come off of course

why it's stuck I can't tell from that angle,
but since the only thing that fixes the pulley (or your case the fixed sheave of said pulley)
to the shaft is the nut that you already removed..
I'd say penetrating oil, a few licks with the propane torch,
maybe a few taps with the decision making mallet..
and -what comes in handy at all times when working with penetrating oil- some patience.

it's essentially the exact same idea as the jackshaft you removed the new one from.

if you have a bench vise, open it up, so the sprocket behind the sheave lays on the vise,
thread the nut back on a few turns so you don't mushroom the threads
then after some soaking with penetrating oil (overnight or so)
and after you tried to be gentle for long enough
give it a nice sharp blow dead center on the nut
(remember to NOT have the thread protruding the nut or you'll never get tat nut off ever again.)

And if that too fails, a new shaft costs 20 bucks

yes 14691 is the correct one according to the manual

You were right!! It came off after some soaking and everything so far has gone back together just you suggested. I truly want to thank you for your help on this. I’m a novice, with a little help From you and others I actually think I might get this thing running! I’ve got a lot more to do and will be, I’m sure, calling on your expertise again. Thanks for helping out this ole novice! I’m sure it’s frustrating at some points when dumb questions come across
