I know nothing about this stuff, but I need a metal shop project.

You have half of a torque converter set-up. You have the jackshaft with a driven unit (the pulley) on it. Most people prefer the torque converter over a centrifugal clutch. It kind of acts like an automatic transmission with overdrive. Geared properly it will give you good torque at take-off and a nice top speed. The part that you're missing is the driver. It goes on the engine.

A ballpark is 5000-5500 RPM. Lots of variables involved.

Oh so in theory if was hitting 25mph at 2,500rpm then when I was hitting 50mph would it be spinning around 5,000rpm, or does it not work even work anywhere close to that?

Oh and since it is 16hp that would give me great take off and make the tires spin in the dirt for a second before the tires grab, if it is geared correctly?

Has anybody used one of these duro max engines for there go kart? My dad has a 10,000 watt duro max generator that runs great.

Sorry alot of questions.

Basically. With a fixed gear ratio, this would be true in theory. With a CVT, it's going to vary.

Yup. Lotsa torque.

Post some pictures of your kart, CVt, and jack-shaft. If you want to use that 16hp we are going to need to determine whether or not the CVT you have is up to it. I have seen those duromax engines before, most people seem to be happy with them, although mysteryboy doesn't like them.

Thanks. Drive unit, which would be the other piece that would drive the belt? One guy (my dads friend) said if you make a kart just make it chain driven what is the purpose of that belt exactly?

Would this be it? http://www.hotgokartpart.com/193-new-mini-chopper-go-kart-comet-40-drive-driven-clutch-system.html

"Recommended for 8-18 H.P. engines. Drive clutch engagement range min. 1600 RPM and max. 3100 RPM."

I will be running it over 3,600rpm so will this still work, or do I have to get a different kind?

the two parts : driver and driven. this is not the same exact series but basic operation remains the same, i beleive the 40 is flipped from the 30, so dont refer to this video as any sort of way it should run http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjhY33f40ds. A torque converter changes your gear ratio on the fly to provide low end torque, then as the centrifugal force opens the driven and closes the driver it changes into an operation for high end speed. a regular centrifugal clutch would cause a major drop in torque and speed and if not geared correctly you could burn up your clutch

Also the back tires are flat but that big sprocket gaurd is only like 1-2" off the ground, is it possible to make some kind of suspension on the kart to raise it just alittle and or get a smaller sprocket. (of course small sprocket is going to change stuff but I don't know what the resaults would be)

That video was wild looking lol, never saw that before. So another wards I should have a touqe converter like I have?

That is what your saying will decrease my tourqe and speed, jsut have it chain driven like that?

Ok, well I am going to buy a new tourqe converter and a sprocket (once I know the size I want) because the ones on my cart are so rusty, I want my kart to look almost like it came right out of the factory.

What should I be doing right now? Picking the engine I plan on running in this go kart and go from there or look at stuff I want to do to the frame? Because i am going to take the roll cage on it now off, then weld on this kind of roll cage on it. I also will need to move my seat back a little because my knees are hitting the steering wheel, I also may just want to get a whole new seat. So right now I am lke where do I start, so can you guys guide me along of what I should start doing?
