Honda Gx200 governor action help

Hi all, Greg-O here, needing some help on my engine. I got a gx200 Honda, not a clone, and i took out the governor assy. and now dont know what to do with the governor control on the carb, it just sits there. Do I need to fasten it wide open, shut, or somewhere in between? Do I just need a mikuni or can I stick with (new) oem carb and modify the governor control on the carb? also, i honed the engine block and put some new rings in it with a gx160 head and thin gasket for higher compression, new valves seated, and the thing will dang near rip your arm off on that compression stroke. any help is appreciated yall.

remove all the extra linkages until you have just a choke and throttle connection on top of the carb. connect the cable from the gas pedal to the throttle connection

oh, so the governor assy. just works the choke on the carb? so I leave it disconnected, but it would open/close on its own, not being connected to anything, and i need to leave it in a fixed place, so it dont hit a bump and get out of adjustment.

Sounds like you have so much compression that you need a external portable Junior drag racing starter. They use a 3/4 socket and go onto the flywheel nut to start High compression engines. The starters are around 200$ But you might be able to use a drill.

IDK about no drill but you might have some luck with an impact wrench/gun

if its a flathead get rid of the eyebrows. itll increase airflow and get rid of some compression


about the choke. there might be a spring on it to keep it open. if not, then somehow restrain it in the open position

that answers my question, about the choke, keep it fastened open. okay. when i do that tho, the engine is reved up really high even when I throttle it down, it's turning some RPM's.

Hondas and Clones have compression release, if you have a stock cam.

compression release. hows that work?

a mechanism on the cam shaft that holds opens the exhaust valve for a second before compression gets about half way, until the engine starts up good, and centrifugal force disenguages the compression release mechanism. or, that's the way i perceive it working.

I'm kinda interested in how the release works too. My OHC Robin has some sort of release on it to make it easier to start, but I haven't taken it apart to figure it out. It works really well though as there is hardly any effort required to get the engine to start.

GX240 cam's compression release mechanism. This is pretty much the same setup on all Honda/Clone cams.

Pull the carb and exhaust out and plug the intake with a wadded paper towel so it fits tight, if you crank it over the wad will get shot across the room. or try taking off the recoil and turning the engine backwards, thats how much compression it really has. IDK how it works but it does.

Turning it backwards doesn't do anything. Cast iron cams, no. Plastic cams, no. When it's running it disengages.
