one more problem with the hf welder is that it dont have a sexy, glossy blue paint job with a mirror like finish.
millers just LOOK cool. my lincoln powermig 140c (mig) has a nice red paint job too tho.

If you want portable TIG, a bigass alternator with some modifications coupled to a clone motor will do the trick. If you want HF starting, they aren't that hard to build.

I weld basically everyday of my life at work. Its either mig or tig. The only thing different is that all our tig's are hand operated. That means the "Controller" or foot thingy is on the tig handle itself. Now im not sure how popular this is outside of shops but if you think welding with the foot control is hard, try adjusting your "heat" with your thumb while moving and feeding in rod and still trying to get a good bead down. I got pretty use to it and ive only been at my place for about 11 months now.

Here is a example of what i mean by hand controled

hehehe i know exactly what you mean lol... welding with the pedal is a real piece of cake!

the thumb amptrol is also a pita to operate when you have gloves and a big 300 amp liquid cooled torch ... lol

I work on Gas Haulers ( You no those big tanks that deliver fuel to gas stations) and other tanks and there would be no way in hell you would be able to get a foot control into the tank and try to operate it when your in the most uncomfortable position alive lol Also i barely use gloves i no it might sound hard to believe but i dont. Since the gun is liquid cooled the gun doesn't get to hot and then i just hold the rod far enough to not feel the heat but still have control over it. Oh yea im also only 19 lol im glad i learned how to weld young.

i'm 20 lol so you're into high pressure welding or what? i'm currently doing tests for my ASME qualification!! lol

you do know that the arc rays will burn your hands at a distance... especially on tig welding the arc is bare and really nasty to the skin... i would really glove up! skin cancer is a real concern

hell i once welded 5 min on aluminium with a tig and no gloves and my hands peeled for a week!

Well lets just say my work (which i will not name) doesnt really go by the qualification papers lol Unless its a certain type of metal the tank is made out of, i can weld it lol After im done welding it another co worker of mine inspects it and tests it. If it fails i have to redo the whole thing till i get it right. Its their way of making me a "professional". I can weld aluminum all day without gloves and i never even got sun burnt. Also if i was worried about cancer i wouldnt smoke, drink or even breath lol (joke) I do glove it time to time tho cause sometime it just gets to hot and then its just the rod hand.

like holding the ground in one hand and the live electrode in the other with no metal between them??? lol its gonna give you a nice 60-80 volt shock... or about 8000v if its a high frequency tig LOL

No, Never weld with your ground lead on the left of your body and the work lead on the right for instance. It can give you electro radiation and can lead to testicular damage.
