It's up to you man. I'm taught by a certified welder in a shop that runs a public CWB program so I would say my teacher knows a thing or two. Sure a little bit of MIG welding here and there probably wont affect much, But when your welding all day long improperly it can start to add up.

yeah electro magnetic radiations are a concern too but just dont coil the torch wire around you... for you guys that are welding like once in a week- month of so its not a concern... for me ... i try to avoid like tyler said to not wrap the cables around me...

no doubt on that tyler but let me put it in another way... do you melt 40kg of wire per week?

anyway yes you are right even for short periods safety is a big concern!

Its more dangerous working in an scanning place or working as a pilot or flight hostess than welding. People that work in scanning places in particular get exposed to a lot of radiation which is why they wear dosimeters. A pilot gets exposed to more radiation than someone on the ground so they have more of a chance of getting something like cancer than a normal person.

If you want to test this welding theory then put a dosimeter on a boilermaker and see how much radiation they receiver over say a month period.

welding doesnt emit gamma radiation... much like magnetic radiation

True that, A condition called "Arc Blow" While arc welding proves there is magnetic radiation present especially DC - Arc welding.

i so ****in hates arc blow ! it always happens at the place you dont want it!!! LOL

or when you are welding a round-ish part on you table and the part starts to wiggle all on its own... and sometime with quite a force!!

Yeah, Arc blow can get pretty bad. Try to hold a tight arc and it sometimes helps. I hear trying rapping your ground wire around your work but that cant always be done.

arc blow in semi automatic is very hard to diagnose... sometime its also caused by heat buildup...

not having the wire coiled in a bunch helps too

I haven't seen arc blow with a semi-automatic style welding yet, More with the ARC welder with 7014 doing 1/2" MS.

lol in all the tons of rods i melted (mostly 7018) i think it must have happened 5-6 timex MAX. switching the power source to AC can help reduce or eliminate arc blow

with semi i have some almost every week... lol for example for the past 2 weeks i had to weld 50 hydraulic cylinder support brackets and i would have arc blow at a specific pass EACH TIME!! wathever what i would do i would have arc blow at that pass... lol
