vd2021, your not going to like what I have to say, but here we go.
The person that had it befors you took the whole thing apart . driver and driven and didn't put it together right.
The driven's spring is sprung they took it apart and didn't reset it.
Chances are that the driver doesn't have any weights in it, at high rpm the clam pieces will still spread and grip the belt creating the slow movement ... I bet that if you reved up your engine and the tires started turning you would be able to agresivly grab you rear tires and they would stop.
Take the bolt out of the driver to take it off, slowly take off the outside part of the driver and pull the two apart ( like a clam shell ) fold them open, put on a table and grab your camera and take a picture showing us both inside halfs. dont pull any thing out...... then post picture here.

Thanks. I'm trying to get a running go Kart for my kids and not spent a grand doing it. I'm only about $130 into it so far. I have attached a pic of the exploded view to help me as I am not familiar with some of the terms yet. I have had the driver apart to clean it. I used a rough and fine wire brush drill attachment to remove the dirt/rust. I still need to hit the part #12 with the wire brush a little more. All of the parts on the pic are a part of my driver. Can you use the parts view numbers to help me with your instructions for removing and taking pictures? I will take them this evening when I get home. Thanks so much for your help. I want to get it running but I don't want to buy a part/something I really didn't need because something else was the problem.

Your buttons may be worn. The cam should be up against them, not floating between. Also, the rust on your driver isn't helping.

i'm not completely sure if it is supposed to look like it does but your driven's cams (pic 3) look as though they may be skipping over each-other. if you take the belt off then turn on engine does the driver expand? try that

just to let you know that pic is of the the driver, and t-man is talking about the driven, also i would think that it would take a decent amount of force to push the driver's faces in. i suppose you could have the engine with an internal reduction, then a gear box to increase the rpm, after you fix your driven, if it still doesn't work, i would suggest you barrow a similar engine from something else then put the driver on it and see if you can still push the face back at high rpm. this pic is of a 40 series driven but it should be pretty much the same as a 20 series driven,

r97 Im actualy talking about both but lets start with the driver first.
Take out #1, .........13 and 2 are just washers.
#3, 4, 5, and 8 should be one unit,..... slide these off the shaft.
#3 and 8 should seperate exposing 4 and 5
take picture. of inside and post.

nothing wrong with your driver, could use some lube, and maybe a bit of that rust removed, my best bet is that the engine rpm isn't fast enough.

wow .. that looks nice. yep I was wrong on the weights, they are in there. r97 is probably right. that gear box probably reduces the rps so much that the weights dont engage.....but that driven definately does not look good.

like me and redsox and t-man said, that driven looks bad, i think your missing a c-clip on the driven(part #1 on the sketch of the driven i posted), could you take a close-up pic of the driven?. do you have any other small engines sitting around?

EDIT: thats a fancy planetary gear box you got there, i think its made by Honda or for race engines, if so i think it is 6 to 1.

The torque converter wont even work with a 2:1 wetbath... you need a new engine. Once you have the new engine from Harbor Freight we'll worry about getting the driven clutch put back together correctly. I'm really surprised that it took him looking up his model number for anyone to notice that from his pictures on the last page. It will not work with this engine, even if you remove the gear box you have a splined shaft. However these were nice karts, Carter makes a nice kart, you'll be happy when you get it up and running. If you have trouble with the 2 molded seats wobbling PM me.

Thanks Everyone. I actually grabbed the 6.5HP honda clone from Harbor Freight on the way home today. I had a coupon for $99. I have it on the Kart but discovered I need to get a new bolt #1 (5/16"-24 central threads) that I will have to pick up. I'll wire brush the rust from the driver and get it to look as I did with the inside of the two parts. From there I'll tear down the driven, with pics for you guys to take a look at. Thanks again.

Up and Running

Thanks All for your help. After returning for the holiday week-end I purchased the bolt from Lowes. My Son, Daughter and I put about and hour on it yesterday. I know I need to pull, clean and re-install the driven, but it runs well right now and changes ratios. I do want to adjust the spring so that it changes to top speed a little quicker.
I've already sold the intek engine with the gear reduction to offset the new engine. Thanks.

Fantastic man, I can't suggest fixing that driven as fast as possible, it could cost you a new belt if you ride very long with it being out of place. Good to hear they're enjoying the kart.

Last note, please make sure your daughter ties her hair up above shoulder length as well as any females in your family or males with exceedingly long hair. Safety is king.

Very good safety points. Thanks. I already make them wear helmets and I installed two sets of 4-point harnesses I purchased new on ebay. Before I give my son free range I'm going to govern the throttle. There's a set screw on the engine's throttle that I'll use if it doesn't stress the cable with the pedal fully pressed. I'll search here for guidence.
