Your reduction box might have a wet clutch inside. Post some pics so we can see it. To really make 100% sure about what he reduction is, first look for any markings on the reduction box, it might tell you. To see if it has a clutch, look for those markings and google it, or post some pics of it for us to look at, or take it apart for us to see.

Man, that MIGHT be a 2:1 wet clutch gear box..... Can you spin the shaft/sprocket and it freewheels, or is it directly connected to engine crank? If it free spins, itsa wet clutch set up. No free spin, its just a GRB. 2:1 gives you a lot more torque from the engine. Can be useful.....Maybe post some close ups of it. I couldnt really tell by that pic....

OK got a close up in album. When I try to turn it its real tight like I'm turning the engine over. Torque is good but how would that affect my speed.

Ok this thing has I'm guessing gear oil in it maybe. So I'm think in king the same wet clutch set up can Ido away with that

Well its confirmed its a wet clutch system. And I think I'm going to use it not. This motor came off a concrete mixer so getting the sprocket off was a chore I'm just about ready to mount it. Think this cart is going to be fun.

After thinking about it nah I'll keep it on and see how it works out.now getting the sprocketoff that shaft was a pain but iI got it. What kind of sprockets would y'all recommend using on this thing. I want it to be fast but at the same time I want power to

Whoa...... a concrete mixer? That is a 6:1 gear box..... Now its time for some serious decision making.....

Honestly I'm not to sure about ratios. I opened that thing up its one big clutch in there and gear oil. And yes a concrete mixer and by the reaction 6.1 sounds like a good thing so what would be the best sprockets to use I tell be off road mainly what'sthe ssuggestions folks

well with a 6:1 reduction gearbox,
you can get a very low ratio for the final drive (clutch out-> axle)

Say 1:1 if it'd been a 100lbs street kart with 10-11" wheels
Start with twenty teeth each.

add one tooth to your axle sprocket for every 50lbs more, every 2" of added wheel diameter and every 10° road inclination you intend to climb

so a 200lbs kart with 18" wheels going 20° up hill
end up having 20 on the clutch and 28 on the axle
that'd be 1.4:1 final ratio times 6:1 clutch ratio or 8.4:1 overall ratio

sounds about right to me ;)
(WARNING: this is an estimation!! Not a proven formula)

Ok not sure how much cart weighs not to much though Ican load it in ttruckby my sself but I think I can figure it with that info my only question is my back tires are a tad bigger than my front and I'm planning on putting a solid Axel with sproket centered so both back tires spin together will this make a difference

well, the back tires are the ones that count of course (the driven wheels to be precise),
but it doesn't matter if it's one wheel drive or if you have a differential or -like you intent to have- a live axle.
-- well not for the gear ratio that is --

OK the formula just ain't clicking to me. Kart is 150 pounds rider is 170 pounds and it has 14.5" tires, the degree up hill I may be traveling is not going to be much can't give a number on it it'llbe mostle flat pastures and muddy trails.

'sid, your formula is spot on

300lb weight with 14.5" tyres, you should be good somewhere in the low 20s on the axle with a 20t on the engine.

You can use this jackshaft calculator to find a final number, just put 1, 6 & 20 in the first three respective boxes; changing the number in the last box will then change the final ratio

Quick question...... Go out and pull the rope to start it, (disconnect spark plug or turn off kill switch) Does the shaft spin like it would on a "standard" kart engine, or does it do nothing. I was told 2 different things today and want to verify something. .... please....
