I think if you remove that reduction unit you'll find that engine has a 20mm shaft, so you'd have to find another engine with a 20mm shaft to fit it on. Or you could find another gx240 and swap out the crankshaft if yours is still good. If you do away with the reduction unit and go with a regular engine and centrifugal clutch you'll have to get a larger axle sprocket. If you get a torque converter you might be able to keep your axle sprocket but it'll be very high geared. Is your kart belt drive? pics please.

yeah i can probably do that tomorrow..its crazy though, the bracket that holds the piston onto the cam shaft i think thats what it is just snapped or somthing and just destroyed the motor.

My kart has the same engine and belt drive setup it's surprisingly fast considering it must weigh at least 500 pounds with the 3/8" spring steel protector all the way around it, and thick fiberglass body that I haven't gotten around to taking off yet.

Pics: (sorry about the bad quality, old beater camera)

The crankshaft can't be reused, it got scored from the bearing (which actually fused to the piston)

And some durafix thrown in there too?

But seriously, what options do I have for motors? Do all 8 horses use the same bolt pattern/case design? I've seen numerous engines and they all look like the same design.

...why did I do that?

One option would be to replace the engine with a HarborFrieght 6.5 hp clone. It is not a honda, but the are pretty good for the money. I bought one for $95 a couple of weeks ago (I posted where you can find a 20% coupon around that same time). Your old honda engine could be used for parts. You really can't repair your honda cost effectively, you need to replace the block which probaly cost more than a whole new honda engine, parts are expensive.

I looked at that motor and figured there wouldn't be enough power to push my tank of a kart.
Here this 9hp engine should be the same physical size and the same bolt pattern as your gx240 I think it's a gx270 clone http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2009080821154148&item=28-1676&catname=engines they also have a 13hp for $30 more.
If I were to go with either of those motors what would I need do in terms of a drive train? I want to remove the 2:1 and I like the idea of a torque converter, but it just seems like too much $$

If you could find a way to turn your new engine shaft down and rekey it to fit your 2:1 reduction box that would probably be your cheapest option. If you went with a centrifugal clutch you'll need a new axle sprocket and chain. If you went with the 9hp it wouldn't be a problem running a tav2 the 13hp might be at it's upper limits especially when you consider the weight of your cart puts that much more stress on the drive train, you'd need an axle sprocket for that too and chain of course.

What would be the best gear ratio to run with the torque converter if I plan to run the nine or 11 horse motor? I have 11 inch slicks right now, but thinking about buying the 13 inch slicks from gokartparts.com.

Also, I am planning to remove the governor, but I heard you need to upgrade the engine or risk it detonating. (Which I just found out is what happened to that Honda) So should I buy the 6.5 HF motor and upgrade it, or just go with the nine or 11 horse from the surplus center, and probably leave it governed. (Or I was thinking about putting a throttle stop on the carb lever to prevent it from running max RPMs?)
