...This disaster though was a major blow to any future nuclear power plants. Next time build it away from a fault line.

Nah, Fukushima was built too close to the coast, in fact right on it, and stupidly.

The waves crashed in and destroyed the emergency generators that would have provided power to cool the reactors. It was a disaster waiting to happen and Tokyo Electric Power Company was found negligent in meeting basic safety requirements in "risk assessment, preparing for containing collateral damage, and developing evacuation plans."

Maybe if the generators were kept off the ground level or situated in an impervious structure the disaster could have been averted but it wasn't and the contamination has spread to the ocean and beyond. Thanks Japan.

I still say as far as the human race goes we are a collective failure, we pollute most every place we go, we kill everything including each other, we waste the resources on fighting for resources instead of finding ways to expand out off the planet. We are just like a stupid virus that kills it's host and in turn kills itself.

That is a ridiculous statement!

I'm in the Pacific Northwest. I don't eat seafood anymore and I don't go in the water.

Unlike Chernobyl, which did radiate everyone through the air and milk, Fukashima is spreading all over the world via ocean currents as well as the air. The West coast of the U.S. is already contaminated.

There will be long term affects to humanity and all other life on the planet.

How many other nuclear power plants are there? What happens in they lose power or experience a natural disaster?

No, it will be Terminators killing us off--we're hurtling quickly in that direction as we have haplessly developed drones, smart bombs, self-driving cars, autonomous weapons of war and built artificial intelligence into each and every appliance.

Skynet will become self-aware and see humans as a threat to its existence and act accordingly.

Gojira has a penchant only for clobbering Tokyo ad infinitum and must take some sick pleasure in stomping it to bits every time the Japanese rebuilt it. He's not a threat to the world at large. :p

Probably would be a non-issue had we all used Thorium reactors instead. We have supposedly more of it and it's supposed to be safer. But somewhere around the 1970s the idea was scrapped.

That is a ridiculous statement! You should take that advice and go Kill yourself!
:smiley_omg::lolgoku:Did I offend you with that statement ??? touch on a nerve maybe ??? ...do you think you have made the planet better ???.
It is just my opinion relax, it's gonna be OK but looking at the world with OPEN eyes it is plain to see just how messed up we humans are in living out of sync with nature.

Yeah fukushima would have happened whether humans were here on this planet or not.:sarcasm:

I like my warm cozy homes, tech toys, my vehicles, my motorized toys I'm guilty I can admit it but I could give it all up if I had to but actually I'd rather see us using technology to make the planet a better place rather than making weapons to kill everything several times over.

Heck, there's always something scary in our town's water quality report.

One thing is radiation levels. "It's recommended that people who have had Cancer do not drink the water." Gee thanks, it would have been nice to tell me BEFORE I got Cancer from drinking it!!!!

This is why when I have my own place, it'll be on its own well and septic system. Be it radiation or some moron contaminating the water system, it'll be safer being on a well than on the main grid.

Septic tanks + well = endless recycling of your water ... Space them REALLY far apart and get a composting toilet.

Wonder how much it would cost to get a recycling system like that? Would save a ton overall and not have to worry about losing water in the well ever.

Post edited; be careful what you say, Eric...

Exactly what part of that statement do you find ridiculous? Personally, I think it's right on the money; remember the line from T2?

"It's in our nature to destroy each other..."

In 1989, Newcastle, Australia was rocked by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake. How can this be? The nearest fault line (which is where earthquakes occur) is well off Australia's northern coast, thousands of miles from Newcastle...

It has long been suspected (but unable to be proven) that coal mining played a large part as Newcastle sits on one of the worlds largest coal deposits, which has been mined for more than 200 years...

How is this not mankind destroying it's environment?

The part that says:... Well the part I quoted.

That is a bunch of Hog wash! Total ridiculous BS.

All I did was tell him to follow through on his own prediction about his race.

As I said, I disagree; I even provided an example...

That's the thing about freedom of speech & expression, anyone can think &/or believe whatever they want, it's called "having an opinion"; yours may differ but, you can also think &/or believe whatever you want, no matter how much it differs from anyone elses thoughts &/or beliefs... ;)

All I did was tell him to follow through on his own prediction about his race.

Agreed but, try to be a bit more subtle about it or, at least, a little less brutal...

The only time I'd be ok seeing the work "kill" on this forum is when it's followed by "switch"... Just my 2c

Let me add what is Really STUPID here.
This whole Convo started in the News cause it was reported Japan leaked 780bq (becquerel) of Radiation into the GREAT Pacific ocean.
Any body here even know what a Becquerel is?
Please allow me to explain it very Simply.
The U.S EPA calls an allowable amount of Radiation in Drinking water to be "free of harmful radiation" at less than 740bq.

So at 740 becquer you can Drink it. but OH my!!! Lions and Tigers and Bears!!! 780 in the Ocean. The Sky is Falling The, Sky is Falling!

Educate yourselves... Don't be sheep Blindly led off a cliff. Next thing you know you will believe in Global Warming too! That would be ridiculous!

Ok it is really just 76 Million Bannanas
Let's start from the beginning with the banana equivalent dose, the BED. Bananas contain potassium, some portion of potassium is always radioactive, thus bananas contain some radioactivity. This gets into the human body as we digest the lovely fruit (OK, bananas are an herb but still...):

Since a typical banana contains about half a gram of potassium, it will have an activity of roughly 15 Bq.

Excellent, we now have a unit that we can grasp, one that the human mind can use to give a sense of proportion to these claims about radioactivity. We know that bananas are good for us on balance, thus this amount of radioactivity isn't all that much of a burden on us.

We also have that claim of 20 trillion becquerels of radiation having been dumped into the Pacific Ocean in the past couple of years. 20 trillion divided by two years by 365 days by 24 hours gives us an hourly rate of 1,141,552,511 becquerels per hour. Divide that by our 15 Bq per banana and we can see that the radiation spillage from Fukushima is running at 76 million bananas per hour.
