looks like a good project...your lucky you live in the UK...here I can't find a good go kart racing harness...I'll just have to try a real car harness....that helmet would give you GREAT protection against things like...wind...or...the 300...later

ebay is good, but watch out for shipping, people often raise it a lot so they can get more profit.

i always add the shipping on when comparing prices.

update: i am on hols, so have a chance to make progress, hoping to finish by the 17th if not sooner. pics will come soon.
i have ordered this tillet 1/4 covered seat, and i have made a floor from 1 or 2mm thick sheet i found lying around.

Pics!!!! my dad is going to weld the pipe and nut housing the black cable stuff 2morrow or fri. in the last pic, the red lines are pipe i will have to put in, the blue lines pipe already there, and cannot be seen because of the floor, and the yellow dots are where i am likely to mount my seat to.

anyone got any pics/ ideas of custom exhausts, and post them up, as i havent a clue about that kind of stuff. i want an efficient exhaust, but not too loud. what would work best, thick pipe, thin pipe, bends or what?

You can weld it yourself? that must take time making him do it for you...im a better mechanic, fabricator, and welder than my dad :roflol:

For the muffler, you can do what i did for my dirtbike engine on my kart. I used some chrome pipe, cut it in small segments at the right angles and welded it together so it would clear my seat (my exhaust manifold points towards my seat), anyways i got it to where i wanted it then made a fart can out of a shaving cream can and attached that to the end with some springs.

i cant weld, i tried, and the stick just stuck! but i said i might give welding the pipe on a try....

have you got any pics of your muffler. and dont bends mean that gases exit slower, which isnt so good? or am i totally wrong?

It does restrict the flow a little, but its not a huge deal if you have smooth bends, the stock muffler restricts quite a bit anyways. Besides, with mine the stock manifold was bend around the engine anyways. I cant get pics of my muffler, my phone is really stupid and wont send them to my phone. You can just make a straight pipe coming off with a home made fart can, I find spray paint or shaving cream cans work best, since once you remove the top valve area and pry it off with a screwdriver, the hole fits over most 1" O.D tube.

Heres one made with a beer can.

Its dumb though, he needs a pipe with good back-pressure for a 2 stroke, but o well.

sounds a bit like a strimmer/ chainsaw lol!

are custom mufflers usually better than stock ones for the engine? do they make it perform better?

and where would you get the little plate to weld it to that bolts on to the engine? or do you fabricate it?

I made my own exhaust flange out of some steel plate...wasnt worth it, took way too long with an angle grinder. You can just cut the one off your stock muffler. As far as power goes a custom exhaust on a 4 stroke engine (2 strokes should always have a special expansion type exhaust) is always going to help as long as it has a higher flow than the stock one. Plus it always makes it sound cooler, but much louder. I was lucky enough that my engine was very quiet at idle with the stock exhaust, so when i made my custom one it was still fairly quiet, but once you rev it up its loud and beastly sounding.

Not the best design, those little baffle holes wont do anything, and its pretty restrictive. Remember the faster the exhaust gasses get out, the less power it takes to push out the next load out. Those direct 90* angles arent the best, its better to have them gradually bend so they have a better flow. His wont be any worse than the stock exhaust but i doubt it will benefit much.

Also if your doing an angle, decide what the overall angle is going to be, and how many segments you want. Then take the angle and divide by the amount of segments.

For example:

Say you want a 90* angle with 5 segments You divide 90 by 5 which equals 18* per piece.

Your going to want to cut each piece at half the angle you want to have at the end so you will have 9* angle cuts on each side of the segment so 5 segments with 9* angles on each side 5x(2x9)= 90

That might be kind of confusing...
