Just finished my custom steering setup. I guess you can call it a form of ackermann. A PVC pipe keeps the tires syncronized when being turned.
I also changed up the hinge mounting, and the new version seems stronger and eliminated the turning radius problem.
After a bunch of trial and error here is the final outcome. Steering wheel is next.

Those two sentences contradict each other: If the wheels are synchronised, you don't have ackermann. Ackermann means the inside wheel turns on a greater angle than the outside wheel.

If you look at pic 3, you will see that the right/outside wheel is turned at a greater angle than the left/inside wheel; you want the opposite of that...

Will this be a big problem at low speeds?

So where are we supposed to send the flowers? Using PVC for your tierod is like replacing your certified parachute with a plastic drop cloth from the hardware store when you go skydiving. If you insist on using some form of pipe for parts, step up to black pipe; that actually has structural properties. 1/2" threaded rod would be a good choice as well, plus you would have a chance of being able to attach whatever steering you come up with.:toetap05: It feels like I'm beating a :horse: when talking to you about safety.....:mad2:

I am going to do several tests before i even think about putting a motor on it. IF the pvc is not strong enough, i will find something better.

Safety will not be a major issue considering i will have a helmet, and im keeping speeds under 15 mph.

there is no question... PVC is not strong enough....

This is stupid. You are stupid. Maybe you should try gluing some macaroni to a piece of paper before you try to make a machine. Seriously. You ignore everyone in this thread so you will probably ignore this post too.

Put down the screwdriver or stab yourself in the eye with it. Whatever....

Woah now instead of just splinters of wood you can dig out chunks of PVC too!!
:cornut:

pvc was the only thing i had lying around that would work.
beleive me, if i had the money, i would go all out and buy everything i need inclluding a frame. but i dont, so this is what happens when you dont have money.

It was laying around so i thought i could put it to use.
Obviously its not the best choice, as there is better materials to use, but the pvc i already had. Hopefully it will get me by.

I plan on starting the horizontal conversion on the briggs soon.
Can anybody here give me some advice on how i should go about the oiling system? I planned on using a strip of metal bolted to the end of the crank to act as an oil slinger, but couldnt you just fill the oil level up to where it reaches the gears and crank?

I figure raising the oil level to sumberge the components would decrease engine power substantially, but i am unsure if a slinger would lubricate enough.

Some advice on this would be great.
