You're more likely to throw a rod, than a flywheel giving out. Looking into cast flywheels breaking, aside from needing to say engine flywheel, as if you don't, you get the cast members list of some stupid drama movie from 2003 as your main result. Anyway flywheels that come up as blown up are automotive. Looked back on a thread from OMB from 2011 and even some members are skeptical about it, and show holes in the block where a rod was thrown. If it's such a bad thing, as I've stated, someone should have a picture of it or video as proof to why you should put a billet flywheel. I know for a billet rod, cause I've broken a rod on a stock engine, however it had a crap ton of hours on it.

Right now it's just spreading through hearsay, either to promote buying parts from a company or forum's store. I do like how one person did say (Doc Sprocket) on here, that it would be better to test the flywheel mounted on the engine, because you still have all the harmonics of the engine, and not have it spun with a pulley and belt. Yeah we know Chinese quality just isn't the greatest, unless it is following strict standards (which these engines are not), but there's no documented case of this happening.

This whole thing can be tested easily and safely and we have had some biters on the line, just waiting to have it happen and documented (video). As much as OMB or Bob's karts push billet flywheels, I'm surprised no one has shown why.

Though I am waiting on some company to come out with a billet flywheel with a balanced stator setup. So someone can still run electric start or lights and do it on a billet flywheel at high rpm if they wanted too. But seems like they are more pushing for racers, than backyard enthusiasts. If they made one I'd buy it, even if the chance of blowing a cast flywheel was unlikely.

To do anything close to a fair test you would need 100 flywheels. Even if just 1 failed out of the lot at say 5k rpm that would be a heck of a risk.
Also there are reputable builders out there saying they have seen failures of stock flywheels under 5k rpm......these guys have no reason to lie....they are clone engine builders not predator

Video 34

I'm not sure about this but it seems like.

At the end of the video it shows a chunk of aluminum and the guy says "a billet flywheel"

I am sure about this, thousands of people are injured every year in karts. Head injuries, stomach injuries, broken bones, bones, no big deal. Getting a steering wheel jammed through your internal organs, what are yah gonna do about it? It's the nature of the beast.

But head injuries, largely preventable. A simple helmet i.e. brain bucket. I have examples where they didn't help, snowmobiles and trucks, but I won't get into those. All in all they're largely considered an effective safety device.

I don't think anyone would argue that smacking your head against an immovable object at any speed is safe. How many of us hop on a kart or mini bike, whatever, without a helmet? At least a few, more?, most? Unless you're racing.

There is documented proof of head injuries, caused to people riding a go kart that weren't wearing a helmet.

The best evidence of exploding flywheels are guys running engines on dynos. All under 5000 rpm. That doesn't sound credible. How many thousands of people have run these engines above 5k? Broken rods a plenty. Flywheels? One video, possibly.

Another episode of Randy's Deep Thoughts.

I like how the one guy on there claimed that several blew up within a 4 year period. I'd rather have proof of it happening. But what constitutes an exploding flywheel? Magneto magnets flying off? Or the whole thing just flying apart from poor construction? At this point, it only is making money for the aftermarket without evidence.

Kind of like how Coca-Cola said for years to drink 8 glasses of water a day without any factual proof or evidence, it was just to make them money by selling bottled water, and that myth is still going strong to this day.

Ok if this is the route we are going I will say if will with a 99.99% never happen.

I've never seen or head of a forged flywheel exploding. Not on go karts or real vehicles. Now type in cast flywheel explossion and you'll find your nice amount.

I would start getting into the metallurgy and the grain bounties that make up the different matterials.

Well....:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

Bigfoot exsits, the JFK assassination was a conspiracy, and we've been visited by aliens from space.

All CLAIMS to be factual!!! (We're still waiting on that proof, other than flapping gums.)

IMO there's more proof of flywheels exploding than global warming.....

Anyone that makes the blanket statement that "Global Warming" doesn't exsit, certainly faces the very real possibility of being viewed as an idiot by the informed and intellectual community.

"Global Warming" or more appropriate; "Climate Change" is NOT DEBATABLE. Anyone with a 3rd grade education and an I.Q. of 100, should be able to recognize that. The earth has been going through cyclic temperature changes for millennia.

Soooo...Global Warming does indeed exsit. The question is: is the recent changes deviant from a natural cycle, or influenced by manmade causes, and if so, to what extent, with what consequences, what causes, and what steps may possibly need to be taken.

Despite what some may think, I do not blindly suscribe to either idiotic side that chooses to make this a simple Political issue. I do not side with either. I don't think we have the answers, but we don't and shouldn't sweep it under the table and dismiss it as a non-issue.

Too much scientific information exsists to ignore, unless you are IGNORANT. And to say those scientists are "bought off" is just plain stupid.

To force major lifestyle change on a nation of people just because someone decides to interpret facts to fit their agenda is idiotic. Especially when those people have been proven to make their own "facts" far too often.

Good point. IMO constantly pushing something that is unproven at best and wanting trillions to "fix it" says alot though.

The "intellectual and informed" community can view me as an idiot if they want. From what I've seen from that camp, they don't have much room to talk.

Rather than trying to put words in my mouth, you should try to read what I said about global warming while you're sober. I know you'll just try to misconstrue what I've said and take it out of context, so regarding that, see the first part of this post.

Back to exploding flywheels... I would say the very act of riding a minibike, go kart, motorcycle, atv, or any of the other things I do every day that make my life so much fun are more risky on their own than my injury risk from one component. I also couldn't agree more that this is a decision you are free to make on your own. I am also more than ready to watch flyinhillbilly attempt to blow one up. THAT, sounds like a party.

I couldn't agree with this more. I believe the odds of actually breaking one are pretty slim or there would be pics and video everywhere, although I don't doubt that it does happen. I think the biggest reason people discount this is the fact that a billet flywheel is as much as the predator itself. The briggs trips me out though as my engine builder said that a stock 3.5 briggs flywheel would take 9500 no problem. I wanted to buy a billet wheel, but he pretty much wouldn't sell me one. Told me I was wasting my money.
I think it's more of a quality control issue than anything.

There's this guy that all he does is build race ready Mopar torque-flite 727. He supposedly is the man to go to. He sells upgrade parts too.

We called about some technical issues and to get some parts. He cannot believe we put 1200 HP through one and can keep it together( for the past 15 years) Apparently he can't do that. Granted there a lot of custom stuff inside ours (wink wink).
Point is. He sells parts. Therefore any other way is impossible. Buy my parts or else.

STOP WITH THE POLITICS!

If I cant tell Everyone here How and Why I think DONALD TRUMP is and will Be the Greatest American President ever!
I should not have to Read this POLITICAL Global Warming IDIOCRACY in a thread about Fly wheel safety on a GO KART FORUM!

I say instead of trying to mitigate the fear of one's OEM flywheel exploding, just allow that to happen should it happen, but make a 'firewall' of sorts to isolate driver and engine.

1/4" or thicker piece of plate steel mounted to the go kart backrest. And wear your helmet of course. And when in doubt, GAS IT!

When we raced Stock cars we had to have what they called a "Scatter Shield" over the Tranny Hump to protect the Drivers Legs if a Tranny broke.
One option was Heavy Steel, But we were also allowed to use Really THICK rubber conveyor belt instead.

Since the concern is mostly on mini bikes and sprint karts. The flywheel on the engine for sprint karts is on the right side away from the driver. The pull start cover would deflect a good portion of the flywheel, or a small shield could be made for right above and towards the front of the engine.
