Cutting Tools Question

yup especially when they get through your jeans and go up your a$$, trust me, it happened to me. it doesnt go away for a few days.

speaking of pain i just found out there was a harbor freight in vernon ct and i went there... got an auto darkening welding helmet... and theyre cheapo grinder.

the grinder works great, exept i just learned that you should NOT touch the surface i just grinded, i have a pretty good burn on my thumb. ow.

riiiight, i am not used to this yet. i use my puny little dremel and it makes "sparks" but not much damage. also i was doing this like at 9pm today out in the dark

alright guys sometimes when im grinding i think im in a bad place if the wheel explodes like i saw that guy who got it lodged in his head but im thinking.

i still got the safety guard on i use 4 inch disks on a 4 1/2 inch hf grinder.

like disks explode on my dremel alot like potato chips but im wondering i dont want to get a hunk of grinding disk lodged in my leg oww

A regular disc wont explode as easily because of the thread/wire/what ever you call it imbeaded in the disc.

I made the mistake of using an old small chop saw wheel on a angle grinder.

It cut like crazy for a few minutes then blew up on me.

If I had not of been werring sunglasses, I would be an eye less.

Use proper stuff with the proper tools and don't hope and then learn the hard way.

It cut me up preety good.

I have never had one explode baddly... Although one did blow a chip out... I heard a bang... followed by a pain in my leg.. A piece the size of a nickel/quarter flew out and hit me in the leg.. No blood.. just pain...

You got lucky.

If you think they are bad, try using a air die grinder in a tight spot.

They explode like slivers of glass and hurt like the dickens.

Fast spinning, small, thin discs are very dangerous. It seems too obvious to state. Buy quality and replace whenever in question. I sound like a broken record but we're taught extensive safety in school metal shop classes so that injuries are kept to a minimum.

No, they just get to a point where they are too small to physically use anymore. I keep cutoff wheels when they are too small to cut tubing or plate anymore, they are still good for cutting curves in sheetmetal.

They do get rough... but they still work.... general rule of thumb... is stop when you get to the arbour nuts...

yah its thick blades on a hf 4.5 like i said......

well i buy the $1.50 disks i got a lot of them but i cant really fford much.

if they last THAT much lon ger and THAT much safer than id buy like 2 of them. i think they are 5-10 bucks a disk at my hardware store

Make sure you arent looking at Flap Disks... Those are like $5-10.. grinding disks are ususally $1.5-2...

I buy mine at Harbour Freight, unless I only need 1, then its not worth the savings... since its spent in gas... I have found them to be actually decent.. I cut apart an old lawn mower Toro deck with one... solid steel/cast iron... It was a sin cutting it appart, but the motor died... now its my workshop dolly...

Dont ya just hate destroying something that was a relative of yours, thats no longer around(ie: my great grandfather..).. But alas I digress...

I dont really see the difference between the HF disks and the Norton Disks(although they are sold at HF too now...) But then again, I am always cautious with any disk.. they scare the crap out of me, knowing that one could burst at any second... then again I ended up nearly taking out my leg with a could carbide teeth of a Chop Saw, when I cut through the Cast Iron fence on it... opps... didnt expect to dodge carbide that day...lol

I know how you feel about the mower. I cant bring myself to grind the mushroomed metal off my grandpas punches.

You dont need to worry about cutting discs being unsafe as long as your using them within their rated speed. A broken disc could mean an injury and a lawsuit, so discs are purposely over engineered.

the grinder is rated 11k and the disk 25k.
i use blades a half inch smalller anyways, i want to be as safe as possible ya know.

Doesn't do anything besides give you a half inch less disc for nearly the same amount of money.

I did have a 5" cutting disc break once and stick into the insulation on the back of my garage door. Imagine if that had been my leg Its was my fault though, i wasnt keeping the disc straight in the cut. I'll have to find the hole and take a pic of it.
