I pulled the cover off and the oil smelled burnt. I think the issue was too short of a spline. I Had pulled it out flush to the last clutch plate but you can push it in like an inch. The last clutch plate with weights is warped- cupping inward like a bowl

So I’m assuming this was the issue. It was the only spline that came with the kit

Or was my mistake sliding that spline out to try and rest in the notch of the last clutch plate?

I had try to slide it out enough to engage this notch

So looking at your photos I see that the clutch center is on the engine side and the basket is on the wheel side.

Going by the diagram on page 1:
1. What sort of bearing setup does the basket have for the clutch center to spin in?
2. The pressure plate assy looks like it has spline teeth so it would sit on the clutch center splines with the plates?
3. Are you saying that the clutch center can float back and forth on the crankshaft when assembled?
4. When the crankshaft mounting bolt is tight, are the pressure plate and other clutch plates tightened down?
5. The image on post #25, is that the pressure plate assy? and is the flyweight portion behind that?

It seemed to be tight.

the pressure plates have geared teeth but the spline doesn’t run the full length

The basket must have some sort of bearing for the clutch center to spin in, correct?
If the pressure plate does have teeth then it should be expected that it should sit on the clutch center splines, correct?

I have no idea. I have gone over the diagrams for assembly

Every diagram shows a short spline but it’s not long enough to even sit flush with the clutch center.

Answer to #5- yes

If the spline doesn’t need to be longer….

I wonder if by playing around with it I allowed the first pressure/clutch plate get behind the clutch center. i did it a couple times re assembling it. That would leave that pressure plate not able to connect with the teeth of the clutch center

If the teeth of the first friction plate got behind of the center teeth that would explain the burnt smell of the oil and friction material. It would not have allowed the frictions to move closer to the steels thus slipping would occur.
