I have no clue, this is my first build. My other cart is ridged so I have no experience with kart suspension. Now jeeps, thats another story. I'm just looking for the best ride I can get with what I have that won't bottom out with my fat going over some whoops.

One thing i would like to add is to consider the engine placement compared to the sprocket now if the engine countershaft sprocket is out of line of the point of pivot for the swingarm the chain will loosen a great amount as the swingarm goes through its motion just think about the physics i would consider mounting the engine on the swingarm if you want to approach it this way...nice build so far though i really like the frame

he is going to use a system of jack shafts to get it in the right place

if u mount the motor on the swing arm then the shocks will have to be so stiff that bumps and holes wont affect it

u may as well not have suspension with an engine that big

The engine sprocket is going to connect to a jackshaft that is in the same location as the pivot points. I'm using the same 3/4" pillow blocks in the same location as the pivot points so the chain tension won't fluctuate with the suspension travel.

It might be better if you drop that engine mount down so it 's about 6" above the swing arm.

Ok I figured out what i'm going to do. If I move 1 of the center supports, I can than recess the engine in the mounts. With it recessed, it will only be about 7" from the swing arm.

Today I ordered the following:
Heim joints for A arms
spindle/hub assemblies with disk brakes and calipers from a Yamaha yfz 450
exhaust header for motor

This weekend i'm heading back to the steel yard for another 70' of 1 x 1 x .125 so I can finish bracing and start on the roll cage.

wow your build looks great, I just hope you respect the massive engine you will be bolting to the frame.

I'm jealous! Every steel supplier around here closes up tight after bankers hours. The only steel we can get is the overpriced 4' sections at Home Depot or Lowe's.

You're doing a great job on that machine!

If your having that much trouble try metalsdepot.com, as long as you don't order anything over 8' long ground shipping is reasonable and you will get a lot more for your money versus buying at lowes or home depot.

Got some work done over the long weekend. Started the roll cage (I know triangulate :D), finished my swing arm minus some bracing and mounted the motor. The mounts are just tacked for now.

Ha, that motor looks huge in there. Looks like you are going to be popping some wheelies and going drag racer style. What are you using for brakes. I am not too sure if you have posted what you are using yet.

I'm going to be running front disks from a quad and a single rear disk. Should be plenty to stop it. The motor is big, but the air cleaner on top makes it look huge.

Got some more work done this weekend. Mounted rear shocks. They are a little too soft, so i'm going to add a second pair. Started building the rear cage and am currently test fitting the front A-arms. First try with the A arms and I have absolutely no bump steer through the suspension cycle. I still have to reinforce everything, but its coming along nicely. Hopefully by this next weekend, i'll have front and back axles installed and tires mounted.

Nice build:thumbsup:...

I see you did not have any sort of bender to bend the box at the back of the roll cage, but it's a good idea how you made the bend anyway.

Good luck

That is correct. I did the same for the front as well. Takes a lot of time grinding and cleaning it up after, but with out a bender, this is really the only option.

Well I got a lot of work done over the weekend.

Jackshaft installed.

Mounted a second pair of rear shocks, reinforced the swing arm (still not done) Welded rear sprocket, mounted rear axle, installed front a-arm, added reinforcement to the tub and fixed a crooked rollbar hoop that was bugging me.

Now i'm just waiting on my rims to come in so I can mount my tires and dial in the front suspension. Next on the agenda is the following:
1. Steering
2. Rear brakes (haven't decided what to use yet)
3. Custom swing arm/Chain tensioning mechanism that will allow me to adjust the tension without a tensioner on the chain

You will need to put a bearing next to your sprocket, you can move one of the inner ones over. Are you going to shorten a rack to fit your frame?
