That's what I did. Loaded the embed code on the desktop youtube site and pasted it in, and I got the above garbage.

I couldn't embed the last video I posted. ???

Well this project got back burnered for a bit... Things are hectic at work, car repairs, holidays, etc.

Plus only one other guy is even near finishing his kart, so the status of the race is currently "we'll see".

That said, I made a brake. 4½" OD by 1½ wide band brake, real similar to the brake on the rat wagon, but wider. Just FYI, steel strapping band works great for the band material. It's super strong, and nice and springy. The big 1½" wide stuff is what my steel shipments come bound with, so I've just started saving it. Then I just cut the friction material to size and rivet it on.

Since I had a brake, I couldn't resist throwing some brake and throttle cables on it and taking it for a ride. No floor pan or kill switch, and the throttle and brake linkages aren't the final configuration, but it goes. And boy does it go.

Acceleration isn't neck-snapping, which is to be expected with my gear ratio, but it pulls pretty good and just keeps pulling. Steering handles great, and the balance feels pretty good for such a short wheelbase. The brake is sufficient to lock up the tires, and it will perform better once the band is broken in.

And it's loud. Loud enough that one quick loop around the block irritated some neighbors. Granted it was 10:30 at night (my mistake... Wasn't keeping track of time) so I can't say as I blame them.

I'm gonna haul it in to work tomorrow and put it through the wringer a bit, and see what breaks. Maybe it will get a fire going under the assess of some of the other guys.

Seeing you have all the fun should get them going, don't let them ride though until they finish their own.

I'm not letting anyone ride till it's reasonably safe either... No floor pan, and the brake cable is just a bicycle cable (albeit a real good one, but it's still undersized), and there's no kill switch.

I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you. Ohhh wait....

I thought we were doing the Airplane thing AGAIN.

Well I got to run it around a bit after work today. Does pretty good on hills, and runs flat out at exactly 40mph with the governor spring set to 3800 rpm. I really don't want to shoot for much higher an RPM because of the wonderful plastic cam lobes in these engines. The engine hasn't really got the balls to push the kart much faster anyway, and since stock internals are required per the rules, I've pretty much eeked all I can out of it.

I may opt to get a 9t jackshaft sprocket, but the performance is acceptable currently. Should be a good contender if the race ever happens. Maybe in spring. Who knows.

Feel like I wasted my time and money , but now I have another go kart, so it's fine I guess.

Had her out again today... Took it to a spot where there's a half mile stretch of brand new tarmac that's not a public road. Topped at 43 with everything stock but the exhaust. I think a better intake and a slightly bored out jet, and I can call it done.

Then it's time to take it all apart and throw some paint at it.:cheers2:

Next on the list... 10hp drift trike, or 18hp go kart?

Depends on the kart, off road mini buggy style or on road type?

I'm really not a fan of the off road mini buggy karts. They're not enough buggy to do any serious off roading. The power to weight ratio just isn't there, and there's not enough suspension articulation for real rough ground.
They're really only good for trail riding, which is more fun on an ATV anyway, plus an ATV is far more capable off-trail. And a big top heavy clunky thing that really isn't all that fast kinda defeats the whole purpose of a go kart as well.

No, I picture something more like a good ol American Express with a monstrosity of an engine and a 40 series with a 4:1 gear ratio on it. Or maybe a 2 speed transmission of some sort.

How's about something like this? AmEx with larger tires on it.

I FINALLY got around to painting this thing... Already had the camo seat, so I figured I'd just roll with the color scheme.

I also worked out better pedals, brake and throttle linkages, and it now has a floor board, not just a board.

Still no race. Very high employee turnover in the last 6 months... Almost everybody else who was building one is gone.

Still working on wearing out the hand truck tires on the front so I can justify buying kart tires.

wish you luck for race ! . does the 1inch hollow rear axle function well ? whats the distance of wheel for the support ( bearing) .i m trying out a smilar kart as yours . so thought to kinda copy your layout added up with suspension and rack and pinion to steering system.

It seems to do just fine with my not-so-skinny butt on it (195#), even off road. It spins true, and hasn't bent.

Realistically, a proper kart axle with keyways and threaded ends is only $30 from BMI, and this piece of tube would probably have cost about that much if I hadn't already had it on the shelf. It's not hollow enough to really be considered "weight saving" either.

The bearings are 24" on center if I recall. There's only 7⅝" of axle overhang on each side.

Edit: the bearings are 21" on center with 7⅝" of axle out each side.

The axle was cut exactly to length for the tires to fit through the back door on my truck cap.

Got the engine back on, gas tank and fuel lines sorted. All that's left is wiring a kill switch, and she's done.

The gas tank is (was) a 2 gallon tank off a broken harbor freight twin-stack compressor. Cut, cleaned the inside, shortened, welded, added a neck, and made a cap (till my brass one comes in).

I'm planning to put a regular GX200 or clone carb on in place of the dual-fuel clone carb thats still on there from my propane testing. The larger throat Honda style carb really wakes this engine up compared to the stock one.

I did take it out and tear it up today... Even with the 4.8:1 gear ratio and 15" tires, it does well climbing hills, and has a pretty respectable takeoff. I may bump the jackshaft sprocket down to 9t for a little added oomph. If the race ever happens, I definitely won't need a 43mph top speed, due to the terrain, but a little extra torque would be beneficial.

Oh, and the air filter is just a regular tecumesh OHV style filter with a quart paint can lid as a backer plate cut to match the carb inlet. A little bit of plumbers strap and a 1/4"-20 bolt make the hold-down bracket, with a plastic wing-nut from idk what.

The entire build came in around the $200 mark, though I lost exact count a while back. If I had to purchase the engine, axle, and wheels, it would be closer to 400, but still within the specified budget. Not that that really matters anymore
