Soo, I finally put the starter back together successfully, but now the carburetor came back to haunt me.
I don't have any pics of the situation, but I don't think they'd really help (for once), although I have attached 2 pictures of the parts diagram of the carb.
So the problem is:
I cranked on the pullstarter about maybe 15 times, and it wouldn't start but would kinda turn over. Then I noticed gas squirting out around the throttle shaft, which makes me think I need to replace the throttle bushing. But that's not the only problem.
When I got it, the carb had a nasty tendency to leak gas into the choke tube. Same problem here. But this time, since the welch plug and everything was installed, it kept the gas in.
Soo, I got curious and took off the air cleaner assembly.
And the choke tube was FULL of gas to the brim.
I didn't get a picture, but I drained it out.
so I'm thinking that it's got a bad seal or gasket somewhere, but I don't know where to start.
Oh yeah, and the really confusing thing:
Only when I cranked the engine did gas squirt out of the throttle shaft.
Why did it do that? I hope I don't have valve problems...

Forgot to Note...

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention...
When I was trying to crank it up, about 5-8 pulls in:
I realized my kill switch was off. :mad2::mad2::mad2:
That may be part of the reason my carb got completely flooded.

Sooo, yeah, I'm going to try again today to see if it will start with the kill switch in the on position!

Sooo, I was right. The carburetor being completely flooded was the problem keeping my engine from starting. :p
I tried it today, eventually unhooked the kill switch anyways, took off the foam air prefilter, and put some more gas in since it leaked so much yesterday. I also took out the sparkplug to check spark, and it has VERY strong spark.
And, it runs!!!! :auto:
I still need to tune it, since it either revs too high, or dies out. I think it's mostly with the mixture adjusting screw, though.
Sooooo: :wai:
And I revved it up a bit, and IT'S NOT A SMOKER!!! I think the internals are a-ok!

:p
Oops.
Yeah, as I mentioned before, kill switch was in the off position.
And after a few pulls, I realized it was out of gas. :p
Because it ALL leaked out of the carb.

I pulled the carb apart today, this time with a better understanding of a carburetor.
There was a little channel in the needle seat/fuel fitting area, and it was NASTY inside.
It was like there was a BOOGER in it! With sediment! I think some of it may have been the dissolved valve seat. Or the valve seat was just missing.
But yeah, I'm pretty sure I've pinpointed the leaking, with the valve seat, and two other parts were missing(the venturi and venturi seal).
I ordered the valve seat and the venturi seal, but I have to wait a bit to get enough money for the actual venturi, which is like $15! :ack2:
On a sidenote, I'm kinda on my own carburetor-wise for this engine, 'cause this carb is a bit obscure on these 5 horse flatheads.

Id say go the Bronda route.... but as of late to your appearance of experience... You may just have to wait and pay...

I could, but this carb is original.
Just look at it like I'm keeping a Ford 289 with dual Weber carbs on the road(OK, maybe that's stretching it a bit).
Either way, this carb with the long path for air to get to the cylinder, makes it basically a dream setup for torque.
Which is exactly what I want.
Tomorrow at Pate Swap Meet, for all I know I may find an exact matching engine to use for parts or to run.

It turns out the carb isn't missing 3 parts. Or any for that matter.
But those three parts seem to be the only possible problem anyways(at least from the diagrams).
So I'll order a new needle valve kit probably tomorrow, and I'm hoping that'll fix it.
