Could you even screw in a muffler if you wanted to?

I got the 5hp Briggs broke down and cleaned up. I can't get inside to find too well. Here is a before of how back it was. There was grease and oil cooked on for 25 yrs.

I removed the governor, but there was a brass shim in it. I removed it, but a 3/8 tap wouldn't dig all the way into the hole. The bolt goes in a little lose. I added a rubber washer on the inside then loaded up some thread lock. Hopefully it holds. Otherwise I'll have to use a 1/2 inch tap, I'm just worried about the thickness of the side wall where it protrudes out for the old governor arm.

The engine is shiny and new looking..... but, it runs like crap! It surges real bad and shuts off after a 20-30 seconds of idling. I can't get the carb adjusted to idle correctly. I think I'll just store in, until I make an intake manifold and put a Predator carb on it.

the mikuni and walboro carbs are a good alternative too. They have prefabbed intake adapters for them. The $15 carb and custom intake i did was kind of a one off and needs some special consideration for throttle linkage. The mikunis/walboros dont have that issue with throttle linkage.

I was thinking about the Mikuni because of the easy throttle linkage. I really wanted to get this thing going with the original carb because it looks cool.

I made my own. Flanges from flat stock steel and a steel pipe cut and bent and rewelded. The intake gets very cold when it's running. Pretty cool.
