I hate 6010/6011 rods... Such a pain to get a weld to even look decent. 70 amps is too low like tyler said. I believe last timei used around 120.

My 7year old Lincoln 175. It keeps going and going and has paid for itself 10x over.

I'll have to take a better closeup.

I wish i could TIG... I can only seem to manage to fuse stuff together, if I need to use the Filler rod, Im not in anyway steady enough to do it.

so, i tried 90 amps on 1/4" place with an 1/8' 6010...
lmao i had three plates when i was done.
not sure what welder you guys are using, but the Lincolns the school has will cut plate 1/4" when you have them cranked up that high

so i turned it back down to 70 amps and buzzed right along

did a nice AL weld today. about a foot and a half section of 1/16" AL sheet rolled up
almost perfectly smooth along the length until i dropped the tungsten in the AL

My craptastic welding

I'm an admitted self taught hack when it comes to welding. To up the ante I use cheap garbage disposable equpment to boot. My crappy equipment and shoddy skills have held a lot of stuff together over the years however, so I felt I should step up to represent the cheap, unskilled population on this forum.

Pictured below, a bracket made from 1/8" hot roll 1" band and a cutoff of a 1/8" hotroll RHS tube. It's definitely not my best work, but is a fair representation of the crap I churn out. I included a pic of the welder set to the settings I used on this piece just for goofs.

Welder is a reconditioned 220V Harbor Frieght MIG 151, purchased for $140 back about 3 years ago. Coincidentally I bought my CO2 mix bottle for $140 locally also, the regulator for it was another $50. Wire is .030. So this is a cheap $330 setup but has served me well over the years. I've welded on nicer equipment before (the original blue boxes) and the quality shows, but for the general garage jack assery I engage in the HF crap does just fine.
